    Filtering

Interesting. I suppose its safe to say... Where ever you take your test just ask. Or take your test in my town if you want to chill out. Maybe we all need to do that!

    Filtering

I was advised to not filter. I didnt and remained in traffic on occasion. I passed my test with 0 minors. I dont think youre required to filter. Make progress is different be it dual carriage ways etc. You dont get taught to filter and so im happy to say its not required of you either. Plus devils advocate... Its a heightened risk to filter.
  3. Confidence i found came with its mistakes for me. And now into ONLY 2-3 yrs worth of riding. I got a bike and my use was a 70 mile round trip into London and back out during rush hour. I clocked 10,000 miles before doing my DAS. The 125 i had was perfect for the journey. Small and light and got me through all the gaps. I never want to be confident but experienced. Two different things. I have done confident and filtered between lorries on bends, red lined traffic and had my near misses. But they were the most stupidest moments of my life. I now ease back, take the rides slowly and enjoy it. Learn how your bike works, how it turns and its abilities. I am confident i can ride well.. But i sure keep alert! I still wont ever say there was a time/day that things changed. But over time my experiences improved the way i rode not my confidence. Just never be too confident... Thats all im saying!
  4. Im not sure why this will be costing you more? Did they make any indication that their CBT course is a guaranteed pass? Further more, were there any real concerning reasons meaning they didnt train you on the emergency stops and even a road ride? ( i.e your skill, not ready yet and so on). Sounding very cheeky IMO. Especially not fulfilling the day with assisting you on getting a CBT and making you pay more.
  5. What you did was called banter. Gave the answer with a jest of humour. Dont worry about it =D
  6. PASSED 16/10/2014 with a clean sheet. MOD 1 passed with all the nerves in the world. A 10 minute ride around feeling like an hour I had to wait a week or 2 for my MOD 2. I wasnt particularly worried with the MOD 2 as I am road savvy as a car driver and have used the roads for 2 years on a 125cc. I go out for 2-3 hours with my trainer in the morning. He takes me on two test routes using roads that might be used on the test. ( And they were !!! It really helped to anticipate correct lane use and speed control on dual carriage ways onto slip roads. ) After the second route, we ride into the test centre and park my bike up ( FACING towards the exit as I dont want to faff about with slow turns with early test nerves ). The examiner was quick and to the point and told me to kit up, sign the paper work and put the comms on. He then did a tell me show me before i got on the bike. I had - show me how to test the horn ( EASY PEASY ). Tell me how to check the engine oil ( EASY PEASY! ) and then How does the handling of the bike differ with a pillion passenger ( Not too bad, used the bike for hints ). Answer all and then off we go. We leave and take the routes. Smooth ride, CONSTANTLY looking at my mirrors, even on straights, looking at junctions i passed and anticipated the road ahead. We do 3-4 stop starts, some on a hill some not. Control the clutch, keep it smooth and LIFE SAVERS. Over exagerate them to show im looking and do 2-3 life savers ... because i can. Im just doing it to show the instructor that I know safety is paramount. Do the routes, hit some busy town areas, go smoothly and not too slowly. I didnt want to be over cautious. Roundabouts and left and right turns. All done. All with indicators and checks. Next comes INDEPENDENT RIDING. I was brought to a certain area, parked up and then instructed to take a right turn at the lights and follow the signs to XYZ. I did. Now test conditions are spinning around my head and now i need to navigate somewhere id never been to. The thing i kept in mind, if i take the wrong road, do not panic, commit to it. He told me the independent riding was over and then continued to navigate me. 40 Minute ride and straight back into the test centre. Park up like im still being examined and only relax until the bike is turned off. A quick result "YOUVE PASSED". Passes me a clean sheet, 0 minors , says well done. I then get on the bike with the instructor infront , ride back to the centre with my head up high. Done and dusted. One RULE.... IF YOU TAKE THE WRONG TURN... DO NOT CUT THE LANES TO RECTIFY YOURSELF, COMMIT TO THE WRONG TURN AND DO IT WITH THE CORRECT LIFE SAVERS. I just kept it clean, rode smoothly and tried to enjoy it. Hope you all bring a similar story and success. Good luck to all who havnt passed it yet and well done to all those who have.
  7. Just had my MOD 2 test. It went the way i wanted it to go =D 0 minors. A smooth run. Now im a free man!
  8. Just had my Mod 1. A car park spin around yet the most nerve racking moment ive ever felt. A few failed today prior to my turn, increasing those nerves. Seems making speed gets to a lot causing easy fails. I passed and i wished the others did too. They were nice guys. Now Mod 2 is in two weeks. I feel nothing for it. Not sure if thats a good thing. I was bricking my mod 1. The figure of 8, avoidance and emergency stop. Unnatural skills on the bike i rarely practiced. But the mod 2. Its the same road that ive used for 10 years in a car and 2 years ive already ridden on with a bike. Just got to keep cool, over exagerate my obs skills, position well and keep in the correct lane. Any thing that might throw me? Any good advice going?
  9. Booked it with another company? For a cbt, id expect a smooth easy good experience.
  10. Got my DAS booked for end of September. I sold my bike and havnt ridden for a few months. ( do have 2 years riding experience). This is my fear! I can ride. But i know im gonna be rusty and wobly when i havnt ridden for some time. Have no issues with anything else just u turn and the 8. Just gotta keep straigt headed.
  11. i love this topic..... i was riding to work at 4am yesterday ( i know, im a shift worker! ) and i rode over a bridge next to a lake, country side, slowly rising gorgeous sun, clear skies and a soft mist and fog laying over the waters..... i could have creamed. The scene was gorgeous I was so inspired that i might consider riding out to find further scenes and picturesque places. But I want a good camera but something for a beginner to capture these shots! what type of D-SLR would you consider? Can we incorporate that into this thread too please
  12. Im after a smooth commuting bike from a step up from the YBR 125 and off the L plates. This is a bike i might be considering. This sounds daft but how many miles do you get before you start shuffling with a sore behind? I do about 60miles on my YBR and get a bit of a numb bum.
  13. haha i couldnt agree more with you. the commuting is a bit of the reason why i get so much mileage out of it.... its actually takes a lot of patience to stick at 50mph! I just want to twist back the throttle and power house down the road.... but that'd still get me 62mph on a good day Ahh i didnt mention that but your right! Traffic lights and filtering. the only time i struggle is if some douche bag tries to race me. I dont race back, but when your intention is to get in front it doesnt work as well lol. Exactly what im looking at. I realised there are a few variations of the XJ6. I love the shape and model of them. Ive look at other makes ( god forbid ) and just cant see anything as appealing as Yamahas. Naked and the Diversion range. I have my eyes on the XJ6 Diversion F. ( this time i dont mind a second hand bike with reasonable mileage and MOT/SERVICE history ) Send me a link to what you have your eyes on, im always open to opinion
  14. http://i.imgur.com/EPq32VR.jpg?1 What model was it? Yamaha YBR 125 2012 When did you buy it and how much did it cost? I bought it brand new with 0 miles on the clock at retail price 2,499. I did this because as a new bike i decided to invest in a new bike with manufacturers warranty as well as no previous owners. I had zero experience in pre owned bikes and maintenance so felt that a brand new bike would be easier to understand and look after. Good points? MPG!! Amazing miles per gallon here. I will mention the bad points in the next section but the first point that stands out is the cost to fill it up. Even if you got the bike second hand and half the price, you will be laughing at the top up of fuel. Personally I'd never consider getting a moped and just go straight to a 125. I fill up the tank with a tenner and get 200 odd miles out of it. I commute 70miles a day and it costs me £4 in petrol there and back. I do ride at 55mph though and do not exceed this. The size is lovely for a first bike. Its light and nimble and can corner well. It corners well as slow speeds too. For new experiences a light bike and being able to move around obstacles has saved me from a few problems in London. It holds a lovely speed at around 35-50mph. This is to say that if you are doing 50mph you still have a bit of juice to accelerate a little fast in 5th gear. Normally thats the gear im in due to the bikes engine being so small. Its quiet enough not to sound like a hair dryer and has a little pur to come across as a nice motorbike. ( you dont get that stigma of "chavs" on hair dryers ) Lovely smooth gear changing once warmed up. This is also a bad point. Bad points? If you are a confident rider and or half experienced bigger bikes then speed and acceleration is your enemy here. But be realistic, it is only a 125 with a few bhp. It isnt expected to do much more. How ever, when you are on those A roads ( if you still have L plates ) getting to 60mph is a struggle unless there is no wind and you are going on a flat road. Getting to speeds of 70mph does not sound good. If you look, to get to 70 you are almost red lining it. I cant imagine that being healthy. Odd unpredictable gear changing. When i change gears, unless its me, there is either sometimes a full complete ride with quiet smooth shift, or it sounds like its clunking through them all. Once or twice has it slapped back into Neutral after going 1-n-2. But that could be me. Would you get another? I love the model and shape of the bike but i wouldnt get another 125 if i could help it. The engine size and speed will always pull this bike down. Any other comments? easy to maintain with so far cheap parts. The clutch is easy to adjust when it becomes loose and all you need to do is keep it lubed up. A definitely worthy bike to get as a new rider and i would definitely never consider looking at mopeds when you can get a 125.
  15. What'd be your opinion as a step up bike from the Yamaha YBR 125 - Ease to ride, size of bike and so on. Just an opinion, i understand that you wont and cant be liable for my safety haha
  16. I suppose what i should do then is take tuition by the hour. the trainer should determine how id be on the test. If there was a guaranteed pass scheme like they did with my cbt, id have no issues in paying £600. On the positive, the DAS is broken into different exams, lets just hope i dont fail them all. More practice first me thinks!
  17. Without stating the obvious and the fact the L plates stay If i was to commit to a DAS, which is bloody expensive! What occurs if i fail. Whats the norm here. Do you need to pay out the full whack! ( its estimated about £500-600). would you pay this again?
  18. Thank you. Its a new bike and I'm eager to self learn mechanics of it.
  19. What's free play supposed to feel like? When i first got my bike the clutch had to be pulled ALL the way in to shift gears ( also not able to get into neutral ). They adjusted this and its perfect..... but now im hiting 1000 miles down the line and want to keep it maintained... There is a slight wobble on the clutch. as in it can be moved with the tip of my finger backwards and forwards for about 1cm. Is this freeplay? Or is freeplay meaning a tight clutch handle but the distance before biting point? My main question is.... should the clutch have a loose wobble ( not major ) to it.
  20. Hey mate, similar situation. Ive got to start taking responsibility with this. My commute is 60miles there and back. ( 5 pound in petrol and still laughing ). You considered any oils or have any advice there?
  21. I had muc off chain cleaner, I then ORGASMED when i bought Wurth Chain cleaner. Id try that stuff, I let my chain turn a little orange ¬_¬ lets not call it rust. and wurth cleaner with the lube did the job beautifully.
  22. Hello all. I'm a new rider (6months on a Yamaha YBR 125) and bought my first bike brand new. I just wanted to avoid mechanical issues as a first rider in case I get duped into purchasing something awful as well as the MOT and so on. I do my regular checks - every 7 days (380miles est) - lube chain, clean, clutch, brake and tyre checks. But OIL and a full good service from the mechanic is what im looking at here. How often should i consider calling up to take my bike in? Or even, what bike and how often do you? Im not fully experienced as of yet to take the bike apart and to get greasy with my own tools. I cant afford it and / or risk it. I will consider this when i get an upgraded bike and so on and will get stuck in then when i have a bike to play with. If i take it in too, what kind of costs would i be looking at - I understand prices change depending on what the mechanic/dealer actually does to it. Thanks all. ( the manual i have suggests a check up list every 3500 miles - but its vague and just a text book answer. )
  23. Yeah i know how you feel. The weather has been so awful recently that its just a struggle to take my 125 any where beyond the towns i live in. I take a route down the A10 into London ( would use motorway but cant for obvious reasons ) and its a horror when the wind blows. All i need is patience, but when its one of your only commuting options, it places pressure on me ( that and i use the train over winter ) And nooooo I wont get a car haha!!! ( used an economy car on the journey before, just get stuck in traffic and spent £10.00 on petrol compared to £2.50 ! ) (( AS well as insurance, mot and road tax. BLEUGH! )) ((( AND PARKING! )))
