  1. Hello, Found out this morning some scumbag has tried to steal my bike. I thought it was odd when my full beam was on, left mirror was way off and then steering right locked when I turned it around. Having set off, I realise the handlebars are way off. It is still ridable, but I am doing a lot of counter steering and don't feel safe on it. When I arrived at work, I applied the steering lock, but there now seems to be quite a bit of give to it..... I was going to attempt to fix this myself, as I thought it was just the handlebars. But seen as though the steering lock might be damaged, I am seeking some help on the matter. Does anyone know any friendly bike mechanics in the stretford or south/west Manchester area? alternatively someone who could give me some advice or have a look at it to make me feel it isn't as bad as I'm expecting it to be? This is something like the 4th issue i've had loving at this address with this bike (only 2 years). It was only on the road (but hidden behind my car at the end of the street) because my neighbour threatened to kick the crap out of it (unpredictable drunk), when it was stored out of sight, behind my flat.
  2. Ok, so I tried to remember (and understand the fancy words) as much as this as possible when I went to Halfords this morning... one of the employees wasn't too helpful (apart from point to a £100 one saying to get that one), so ended up buying a Halfords set for £27 (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_255215) Just got home and tried it. 12mm one fits but the bolt is on tight and I just ended up rounding some of the corners. I think this is because it was 12 (I think... too many anyway) sized instead of 6... I did ask the guy in the shop and he said most should be 6sided... non were. Questions: 1) Any reason to keep this set? Think Im just gonna try to take it back and get a refund. (possibly buy 6sided 12mm socket now that i know what the size is) 2) My engine oil is now extremely low (ive been trying to do this for weeks now.. pift).. how bad of an idea is it just to 'top up' using new oil, without draining? 3) Should I just give Mr serviceman some money for now and attempt this home servicing some other time?
  3. Finally got a free weekend (were its not raining). Bought a toolset from BNQ the other day, has a good set of skrewdrivers, allenkeys and other bits n bobs (saw, hammer, pliers, cutters). Anyway, tried to do the very basic task of changing my engine oil.... looks like I need a socket wrench thingy-ma-jiggy (something missing from my toolkit) so decided to use the adjustable spanner/wrench I had. No luck there, apart from rounding a few corners off the bolt (doh). seems to be on solid, that and honda seemed to have purposely designed the frame around the bolt so there is only a few degrees of freedom. Only thing I can think of is to nip onto halfords and see if I can get something that fits this bolt... unfortunately halfords is directly over the road from old trafford.. and there is a BIG game on right now... bit of a dilemma since its not raining and my small hole of opportunity
  4. Thanks for the replies. Was in Halfords earlier looking at what tool kits they have. Wasn't sure how committed I was to buy anything around £100+ .. just have a feeling it would be sat in a cupboard for a few years untouched/bought some useless tools, if i did buy one. Hope the weather is alright for a few more days/next weekend. And will keep you in mind Chris since your only down the road (im actually in stretford )
  5. Ok, I'm trying to learn a bit more about my bike (CBF125) and wanting to do my own servicing on it. I have bought a Haynes manual for my bike, hoping that would help me out. Unfortunately it mentions loads of tools I do not have and unsure on cost of them, and on top of all that I am paranoid I will brake my bike. Unfortunately I do not have any biker friends who could help me get over the initial starter steps, so was wondering if anyone in the Manchester area would like to teach me a little, and in return I could teach you something in return (My specialist skills lay in computers [really advanced stuff... im doing a PhD in the confusing things :s])
  6. Today Wish me luck (I should actually be getting ready now) How did you get on? Apparently im not too good at this marlarkey, failed =(. Kinda agreed with the reason. Was joining a roundabout, turning left when car was already on it, but since it was in the inside lane, thought it was fine and didnt want 'undue hesitation'. Went, and as I did, the guy on the roundabout decided to swap lanes and straddle both lanes. Anyway I did it safely, but shouda waited, just had my instructor's voice in ma head as ealier he had told me off for waiting at a roundabout when he could see all the cars were indicating to come off before me.. Hardly any minors, so better luck next time i guess

  8. Well I managed to pass it at the next go Some minors but I think he was being picky... it was chucking it down + windy and I was advised, not to be too agressive with breaking this time for the emergancy stop. Got a minor for not stopping at the examiner's 'perfect' line (still stoped safely and way before cones). Another minor for not stopping perfectly straight on the swerve... though tbh the instructions were to serve and stop in the box.. no angles given
  9. This morning didn't start off too well with the bad rain, combined with me getting lost+rush hour traffic on the way to the test center and turning up a few mins late.... - Somehow got a minor fault for going around the last slalom cone while doing fig-8 - Locked back wheel on emergency stop (50:50 for wet stopping right?) oh well, didnt think I would pass when I arrived, better luck next time eh?
  10. My only problem is will be travelling 170miles regularly once i get this bike (which may result in not regular depending on how much it cripples me heh)
  11. thanks for all the input I think sessions may be 2hours, but i think it says you can swap a 2hour lesson for a 125 bike loan for the day.
  12. Ive done my theory and cbt, but they was both a while ago and its coming upto the 2 year renewal (beginning of aug). This has forced me to get off my lazy butt and finally get my lessons/test out of the way. Problem is i havnt ridden at all since my cbt almost 2 years ago. Just been to somewhere in manchester (moto-techique) for an assessment and the guy there told me to re-do my cbt (£110) + theory again(£31), then do a set of beginner lessons (3 sessions @£44 on 125), then do full DA licence lessons (6 sessions + test, £399) Grand total of £672. I understand he wants me to start slowly but still seems a lot of lessons, compared to the number of people who pass in a week. Which also makes me wonder why hes stressing on me redoing my theory (5th aug when it expires). Is 2 months not enough even with all these lessons? (which im free for the next 2 months anyway) Does this seem reasonable for what is available? I was just planning on spending £400 for the learner pack initially, just unsure now with the learning curve/safety stuff
  13. I currently wear my army combat boots every where, but needing a new pair of boots soon, and im aware of the whole 'dont wear steal toe cap boots when riding' thing. The brings me onto the question of do i buy myself a nice sturdy pair of magnums to use for both bike and normal day to day, or do i buy a cheap set of boots for day to day and a pair of bike boots? Im a new rider btw
