I was very strict to start with,as regards eating etc,but soon learnt that that regime was counter productive to gaining size ,and was more to be used for cutting up for competitions ,basically I would eat anything that wasn,t nailed down lol,...sunday dinner was a whole chicken on one plate and veg on another,musthave driven my missus mad,me and my training partner would come out of the gym all pumped up,and go and sink a couple of pints and play pool,i was lucky to have good genetics and metabolism ,everyone,s different..at 50yrs I was doing 5 sets of 5 reps with 306lbs in the bench press and could blow up a hot water bottle,...oh well age gets to us all ....
