  1. When i say coolant leak, I mean that one of the hoses wasnt tight enough and noticed some leakage so I just tightened the clamp screw which stopped the leaking... could that still mean trapped air then? Ive had a look in the manual and nothing on bleeding...
  2. as ive just replaced the coolant today, could I drain the coolant and reuse it once ive replaced the stat?
  3. ah thanks so much for your help. much appreciated
  4. i suggested stat as its the most common cause of overheating, , and the easiest to eliminate, just remove from water jacket, suspend in warm water, on string, then slowly heat water with a thermometer in it, note at what temp the stat 'opens', you can see the bi-metal move?, if thats ok , then u can investigate more serious options? ok thanks sorry to be a pain but could you explain it as you would to a child because this does not make sense to me (im not that mechanicaly minded sorry lol) whats the 'water jacket'?
  5. whats the cheapest option to eliminate first? buy a new stat, water pump or them test things?
  6. fan will still come on if stat is not opening/closing as it should???, temp sensor on the rad will make the fan kick in???, i.e: rad coolant becomes hot because the water is not circulating through the water jacket, and the fan alone can not cope alone with cooling, as there will be no /or little circulation checki the thermostat this is what i thought... Will the stat be fairly easy to replace you reckon? its either that or the water pump as whitedevil said. ive already got sufficent oil and coolant. hope it nothing more serious
  7. ok thanks, whats a 'leak down test' and a 'sniff test'?
  8. Unfortunately I’m not too mechanically gifted… does anyone know where the thermostat is located on the r6 and how I can replace it.
  9. Hi all. Brought a Yamaha R6 2001 about a month ago and everything was perfect ...Now it has suddenly started to overheat. When it reaches 117°C the red oil warning light will turn on and the oil level symbol begins to flash. My engine oil level is fine and is at the maximum mark. Today I replaced the coolant because this was low and one of the hoses was leaking…. Fixed this, then went for a ride and still the temperature rises (to about 116 - 127°C on average) It gets really hot really quick. The temp quickly rises and stays between 113 – 127. When I ride, it goes down only a little (about 109) but when I stop at traffic lights or when I’m stationary the temp will rise again past 118. When it goes down to 116 the light goes away and the oil symbol stops flashing. The fan works fine as I can hear it switch on and I can see it working. I don’t know what else it could be. I don’t want to continue to ride because I’m scared I’ll blow up the engine or something. Any help will be massively appreciated. Thanks in advance

    Car problem

Not really, all you have to do is hook up an ammeter to the battery & pull fuses one by one until the current draw stops. The worst bit is removing trim etc to access the wiring to fix the fault(s)!! *********************************************************************************************************************************************************** OP you need to find out why your starter is turning slowly. It will either be the battery hasn't got sufficient cranking power, the wiring/earth strap isn't allowing full battery voltage to/from the starter, or the starter itself is faulty. I would: 1. jump start the car from another vehicle that is running, if the starter turns more quickly you will need a new battery. 2. If that makes no difference then look at the wiring. Check/clean the battery connections, earth strap & connections on the starter. The starter is earthed through the engine/engine earth strap!. 3. if that is o.k. then it will likely be the starter motor itself. A work colleague's car had this problem only yesterday, the starter was just barely turning the engine over & no real differnce when jump started from another car. All that i did was to clean the earth strap connections, made a huge difference straight away. Battery was 13.2v (perfect) & the alternator was charging @ 14.1V with lights on full beam, rear demister on & the heater working so they were both o.k. Thanks v much for your suggestions! I will try these

    Car problem

RS Audio fitted it. I have used them to fit the sub and stereo on every car that I have had (which is 5 cars) and never had a problem until now. I will try removing the fuse as you have suggested and see if that works. If not I will just take it back to RS Audio and get them to look at it as I’m not very clever when if comes to car stuff!!

    Car problem

Its weird becuase I dont know if it will start or not. sometimes it will sometimes it wont. I drove to work yesturday as it was soo damn windy and I had to push start it. yet after it being left sat all day at work, it started again fine at 5pm. however, today i drove down the road to the gym which needed a push start, left it sitting for an hour and a half and needed another push start so I think it just picks and choices when it wasnt to start

    Car problem

I changed the battery and alternator so they are both new. Doubt it could be them. Come to think about it, the new battery was ok and it wasn’t until I had my sub and aftermarket radio fitted that the problem started! Could it be that the subwoofer is draining the battery? If so, what could be done to fix it? then again, the same problem was happening when I had the old battery in and before the aftermarker radio and sub was fitted? :s Starter Motor??
  15. Hey all, anyone know anything about cars?? Basically, 9 times out of 10 I have to push start the car to get it working! I don’t think it’s the battery as a new one was fitted about 2 months ago. Could it be the starter motor? Or anything else? The car struggles to turn over which means I have to get my dad to push it down the road in the mornings to get it started. Any suggestions?? Its been like this for a while now but as I ride the bike most days to work, I hardly drive the car so it hasn’t really bothered me. However, as it's coming towards winter, id rather get the problem sorted out sooner rather than later. Oh and its a Vauxhall Corsa 2002 1.2 if thats of any use! thanks
  16. 10-15% difference in abrasion resistance (Disclaimer: Hearsay, but i'm happy to use it for a figure until someone proves otherwise ). Leathers act as a splint due to their tight fitting. And i've come off about 6 times in textiles (up to and including just over 30mph), and not once have i regretted not using leathers. Maybe at the higher speeds - but i'm happy enough. fair enough dude
  17. all the best mate. hoping to do mine in about 4 weeks. let us know how you get on. get some sleep

  23. I had my CBT today and passed. I really enjoyed it. The instructor was fantastic...Simon Williams from 1st Motorcycle Training. (highly reccomend if your from Birmingham) There were 3 of us and all 3 of us where newbies. well, 2 complete newbies and one guy who hadnt ridden in over 20 years. at first the instructor just talked us through the bike and showed us whats what. Then got on the bike and done some clutch control and straight line acceleration and stoping. took me a while to get the hang of it but got there in the end. Then went round in circles which I found difficult to start off with but again you get used to that very quickly. Also done figure of 8 and emergancy stop and signal mirror maneuver etc etc. The off road training was good but I was verrry nervous about going onto the road.... But as soon as I did the fears just went an I started to enjoy every minute of it. I wish it didnt end to be honest. The hardest thing for me was probably the u turn... I completed it fine a few times but felt abit uneasy on each occasion. But I guess thats just normal for a starter. All in all I really enjoyed the day and now im ready for the next step! Theory!
