  1. Cheers for quick replys, pain in arse havin to take them off again but didn't take too long I guess, of course just human error and one of the floats was stuck.
  2. Mystery problem came out of no where this morning, ran like shit between 3 n 4k, like really badly bogged down. Was planing in cleaning carbs this weekend anyways so didn't worry too much, however upon dissassembley I found a large puddle in the airbox! And loads of water around the top of the carbs :/ :S any ideas why that was? I carried on anyways, stripped down the filthy carbs, cleaned and re-assembled, got it started run so much sweeter, but didn't get out on the road die to petrol pissing out of the overflow, what have I done?
  3. just wait up, or get up early. And ping em with a reasonably powered bb gun, no lasting damage but i'm sure it will deter them after a few days

    my bad

no theres no rattling, i spoke to a good mechanic and he took it for a blast, first thing he said with his helmet still on 'aye it does run shite doesn't it' ha as he couldn't understand properly what i was trying to describe. he has advised i check the coils and plugs before taking it back to him and he will sort it, cost me a few hours labour but he is nice and cheap and a top bloke will keep this post updated

    my bad

oh yeah it 'feels' and sounds like breathing trouble ha, but i've thuroughly checked the airbox and carbs and nothing unusual, also, for some reason, it doesn't struggle whilst in neutral it revs a tiny bit jerky but will go to redline fine also it isn't bang on 6000 where it does this it varies in different gears but 6000 is the minimum, there is no megga rush to sort this as i can ride it perfectly fine staying below 6000, but it's just no fun lol what are peoples thoughts though? timing issue? carb issue? or evcen electrical? cheers for replys so far though

    my bad

i've had my engine out and replaced my head gasket over the last week, few hiccups but went well and was back on the road yesterday. it has now developed a huge flatspot in power and torque above 6000rpm, just under half revs. i don't know if 'flat spot' is the best way to desribe it but power goes almost completely and it really struggles to gain any more revs. i drained my crabs and popped in some redex today but doubt it will solve anything. I set up my cams as per the manual but will double check this, my questions are a - it starts and idles fine, and only struggles, albeit really badly, over a certain rev range, does this rule out cam timing as i thought if cam timing was out it would effect running at all revs? b - can anyone give me instuctions or a link to a decent page for setting up my carbs, as i am more than happy to give it a crack myself before giving it to a garage
  7. my insureance company woke me up this morning offering me full breakdown and courtesy bike and compensated travel and all that BS, given the above circumstance i agreed ha
  8. didn't think about anything other than the head gasket so cheers for saying cam chain also i know this is a silly question but...... bare with me....... It is fine to ride as long as i keep topping the radiator up, but it is deffo HG (oil in coolant, white smoke on startup sometimes and obvs overheating) if i keep topping the radiator up and riding it very gently (never above half revs) what are the chances of expensive damage being done, as i have absolutely no other transport to work and wont be able to do the work for another weekend or so :/ shit scenario i know
  9. my head gasket has gone on my bike, it cant go to a garage, cant afford it. I have done many things on this bike but nothing as big as this. I understand how to do it, my friend has the tools, and his dad used to be a rally mechanic so i will manage. just wondering if anyone who has done theirs themselves, how it went for them? and trouble they run into and things i should watch out for, also, should i bother taking the engine out or not? also, do the cams need setting back up or if i put it back how i found it will it be ok?
  10. nice work man, its a real shitter for the bike when you haven't got a garage or anywhere secure to keep it. throttled - that thing is sweet, saw a lot of very similar things in germany, every **** had one over there
  11. i dont know exactley what products are out there but i have seen a few bikes with a remote starter, dont know if it makes any difference but i've only seen them on 125s, and they where coupled with some form of alarm aswell.
  12. i cant see there being a problem spraying them whilst on the engine if you masked it off, but spraying them whilst off the bike would be more convenient
  13. i know this in not helpful, but i doubt it
  14. i dont think the temp gauge is telling fibs, i can smell how hot it gets sometimes ha ha but yes when it gets hot now it is still less than half the gauge so wont cause any damage i think, however there is a minor problem remaining and i would like to sort it so it runs as it used to
  15. by slower i mean 30 or less, if it was in traffic i wouldn't consider it a problem ha I had this bike all through summer and no matter how hard i pushed the engine the temp would never go above a little white dash about 20% up the scale (this is the only mark on the gauge apart from 'H') this white mark is where the gauge has always stopped no matter what the conditions, it would get there faster if i rode faster after starting but thats about it. i will have another fiddle with my radiator, and see if there is any air i can remove, but apart from that the cooling system appears to be working fine, but the bike still gets quite warm (just less than half way up the gauge).
  16. in a previous post you gave your advice and i have flushed the coolant and re filled it and jet washed the f**k out of the radiators and it has improved massively, however the temp gauge does creep above normal, especially when riding slower. just wondering what to try next as i would like it to run how it used to ha cheers
  17. cheers guys, will replace oil and coolant, give the whole system a good flush and clean, will do the HG if i get time. will post again with the results as soon as its done
  18. I did top it up with half water and half antifreeze but it didn't need a lot at all, the radiator will be a little bit clogged from winter riding i guess so will clean it tomorrow, however it is now getting hotter than normal after just a few minutes of gentle riding and i can't not ride it really it is a piss take to do anything on the bike as i had to take the tank and airbox off just to get to the radiator so the next time i have to do that it would be nice to sort the problem haha i do not think it is the thermostat or waterpump or a blockage as when the radiator cap was off and the engine was running, i could see coolant being pumped around, that should rule out all 3 of them? I will have no trouble mechanically doing any of the work required and the bike is 22 years old and just under 20 000 miles, which is around about the mileage other people from forums say there zxr400 head gaskets went. so if i cant defiantly say it is the head gasket would you say it is worth changing anyways?
  19. This is the first problem i have encountered with my bike apart from a few electrical gremlins, it now has a habit of getting rather hot, the temp gauge is way above average after 20mins of riding, and prolonged hard use sees the coolant in the reservoir boiling :/ i do not have the money to take it to the garage but should be able to do whatever needs doing myself with friends, but its diagnosing the problem that i'm struggling with. my first thoughts are thermostat, water pump, leaky radiator, blocked coolant pipes or perhaps head gasket. i have topped up the radiator and the problem is still there, and i do not think it is the waterpump or thermostat, can anyone help me out with finding the cause of the problem?
  20. Very nice bike, although never been on one, beat the zx-11 ninja as the fastest production bike for 2 years before the hayabusa came along. The hayabusa, was called so as it is Japanese for falcon, which prayed on blackbirds, see what they did there haha
  21. Update for the situation, as ov 1st November 2011 if you loose your mod1 certificate then all you have to do is notify the DSA in good time before your mod 2. in my case my biking school has done this for me and my mod2 is tmoorrow morning
  22. That phone number is hopeless, and actually its 0300 200 1122, i spend 5 minutes pressing 1 for this and 2 for that then it just tells me to do it online and the ends the call :/ and on directgov through the DSA there is absolutely no where to get a new pass certificate for any bike test, i can find places to get a new license, but no where for a mod 1 can anyone else help?
  23. I passed my mod 1 a few months ago and left all my documents at my girlfriends, my money went on more important things than my mod 2 (if it was up to me nothing would have come before) and when I am getting back on track and ready to do my mod 2 i was laid off at work :'( Anyways i ask my girlfriend to bring my all my paperwork round and she does, MINUS MY MOD 1 PASS CERTIFICATE!! which now cannot be located i do have the test report but doubt i can just turn up with that. Is my only option to re take my mod 1?
  24. This sounds mega and i see no reason i couldn't make it im free for any weekend and am getting excited already Chris
