  1. If you're on a strict budget then I think tbh, you can do your test with just the lessons with the instructor. I mean, most car drivers learn and do the test with just the lessons and not their own time. my car instructor even said he hated people learning in their own time as they often picked up bad habits. So it's definitely perfectly fine to do it with only lessons. But I do think Priests method is better providing your lucky enough to have that option. I personally did learn in my own time too and found it rather helpful. But I honestly learnt most of the stuff I needed for my test on my lessons, as long as you can ride a bike fine then all you need is lessons to show you how to ride safely and you'll be set. then go get yourself a BEAST! I have the restricted licence, i got a stock 33bhp cb350sg. it does me, can cope with 80 happily and go right round to 105 or so which is fine for your first few years!
  2. You wont be able to ride anything bigger than a 125 with an instructor or not as you're only 19. You'll have to do your CBT then your theory and mod 1 and mod 2 before you can get anything bigger. You'll be able to ride 33BHP so either a stock 33bhp bike or you can get a bigger bike and restrict it.

    no lube on chain

Act as if his bike is yours to any passer bys, and lube that chain good and propper. Leave a note saying "I lubed you up as I was worried you'd hurt yourself. Much love, your bikes secret admirer
  4. Is it carb or FI? raise the wheels and check if they spin freely, could need new bearings or brakes could be dragging. Drive chain too tight? Check the carburettor choke check the air filter, make sure its relatively clean and unclogged. could be a restricted fuel flow, remove the fuel hose and check how well the fuel is flowing from the petcock. if its pretty lame, open the petrol cap and then check again. Also check the muffler isn't blocked. Could do with perhaps removing the carb and giving the jets a good clean. with some compressed air. Thats where i'd start
  5. fair point, it's pretty poorly written. They can fine you £20 I think. Stupid law imo, was introduced in 2002 apparently.
  6. Hold on, a Scotsman who listen's to the law? Whatever next an Irishman who doesn't support Liverpool? BB haha I'm an Englishman!
  7. I do want some easy start. looks pretty useful stuff! I did try pouring a little fuel into the spark plug holes and warming the plugs to see if it was fuel problem. A mechanic told me to try that over the phone, just a heads up for anyone else. I thought it was a good idea. So the garage got back to me. They were so confused... But they did eventually come to a conclusion. It's the ignition coil which is crazy hard to find. But I think I've located one off of somebody on ebay so thats all good. Getting that sent to me hopefully tomorrow. Then that should be me! oh yeah, the garage asked for my service manual, that's how confused they were haha
  8. Hey, you know its illegal to leave an unoccupied vehicle running right? Regulation 107(2)(a). This states that no person shall cause or permit to be on any road any motor vehicle which is not attended by a person duly licensed to drive it unless the engine is stopped and the parking brake is effectively set. Exemptions to the requirements of this Regulation as to the stopping of the engine include a fire brigade vehicle, the engine of which is being used for any fire brigade purpose.
  9. AA has picked up my motorbike, it's now off to the garage for repair. Hope it doesn't cost much... if anything!
  10. I think it used to go around the whole edge actually, with a closer look
  11. Wow that's an awesome website. Definitely be using that when I come to getting a new helmet http://sharp.direct.gov.uk/testsratings/nitro-aikido Cheap and really strong
  12. My gear consists of: marushin samura helmet - I actualy really like this helmet, bought it off my brother cheap £50. Usually like 70 I think. I don't advise buying 2nd hand unless you know it's history. I have an RST jacket, It cost me £75 from a local shop here in Scotland. It's a comfy jacket and very warm. But I did have a problem with some waterproof lining in the pockets tearing and had the jacket replaced. ever since though my new ones been great so I think I'd reccomend it. Boots I just wear some supposidly 100% waterproof boots that I got for £25. They protect my ankles etc. so they're okay'ish for riding. Better than trainers but not the best in an accident. I just couldn't afford new motorbike boots at the time. I figure new ankles are free on the NHS so... Trousers, I wear jeans with waterproof trousers over the top. I've come off a couple of times and found jeans to be pretty good. Again I'd reccomend decent bottoms though, your looking at around £50. And I plan on getting some in the not too distant future. Oh and gloves, I have These gloves. Hope I helped mate Happy early birthday! Heres my helmet being hit with a sledgehammer, makes me feel sorta safe now.
  13. Hey guys, Why would anybody have done this on the flywheel casing? Looks like they've used sticky tape around the corners. http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e264/Mikeamd1990/DSC_0265.jpg
  14. tbh, I think they'll be fine. Check for a little sticker to make sure its all legit but i'm sure it will be. Mind you, it means it will be sufficient in an accident but it might not be too great for comfort and stuff. might have a cheap visor, but aslong as you care for it, it'll be all good. I used lidl fireworks and i didn't blow my hand off, so im guessing they do stick to regulations. They were pretty crap quality though. To be expected.
  15. Hey, my diagnosis proved to be wrong. I took the cover off last night to have a look inside the engine, the chain seemed absolutely fine. nice and snugly fit. Wouldnt got pics if i had read this post first. I fitted new plugs etc. and compression seemed okay when i held my thumb over the plug holes. OKAY! SO! Today, I've phoned around pretty much every mechanic around this area and they all say they don't do motorbikes. So I just casually explained my problem and they all gave a diagnosis over the phone which I then tried. and it's not helped. So... I phoned the AA up today as I'm already a member. I explained my situation and i've now added home start and garage repair to my existing policy, only £22 extra to what I already pay. I pay like £7 a month I think. So that was a really good deal I thought. It takes 24hrs to take effect so tomorrow I can get them out to come and help me. If they can't do it then they'll in theory take me to my nearest garage which is 50miles away. Also, they'll help me with repair costs, win win so long as all goes according to plan
  16. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BP1BOmfn ... e=youtu.be Theres a vid, anyone agree or think its something else?
  17. Right, after a long long long day working over every possible thing I can think of on the bike. I've diagnosed the problem as a worn out timing chain that's slipped after the oil change and is now not firing at the right time. It's a pretty big job. I'm not sure whether I'll undertake it or just get shot of the bike.
  18. Exactly that. I can't see it being a problem. Maybe head down to a garage that does MOT's and just say is this legal? Or head to your local cop shop and ask. I know cops can be total dicks sometimes but they do usually help you out if your polite about it.
  19. They could be right. When i did an mot on my little 125, from what i can remember they did the following: looked around the bike, tapping anything that could be loose. Eg, the footpegs, gear lever and so on. They felt if they had any play in them... If they did, they just said i need new bushes or w/e. Then they checked my drive chain, saw what setting it was on and told me if it was too firm or too loose, in my case, slightly too tight. They checked my brakes by putting me on some roller thing on the floor. Sped it up and told me to apply my brakes. Also checked my indicators were flashing right Checked my headlights were correctly allinged Checked my frame wasn't bent with some laser thingy... And that was that. One tip I have, is clean it to within an inch of it's life, cosmetically if they bike looks sound they don't go into too much depth. Thats not 100% full proof, but in general it does normally pay dividends if you do put some attention into how it looks. They guy even said and i quote "looks like a tidy wee bike, shouldn't be a problem" before he started the MOT. hahaha that would be a bit of a problem huh?
  20. in what way wont it go back in? Will it go like half way in then sort of seize up and not turn any more? maybe spray some wd40 in or retap it if the threads really are mangled
  21. Hiya, Perhaps try this for the cracked exhaust. Losen off the bracket, wrap the exhaust in this stuff Click here Then reatatch the bracket, hopefully the bracket will cover the temp fix too? sorry I can't help more. Is your MOT place really strict? Mine was a total doss here on the boarders. I even sat on the bike while they did the MOT and was purposely being careful of all the broken bits
  22. I have a textile RST jacket thing. Mine completely fell apart on me :S. the waterproof lining peeled in the pockets, the stitches came away too. They replaced it for me at the shop and i've had this one around a month now and it seems good. might have had a poor one at first, maybe lots of people had tried it on in the shop? cos' the replacement was direct from the factory
  23. It's pretty weak tbh... I dont think it's as bright as it should be. I ordered myself a multimeter, handy thing to add to the tool box i figured
  24. and I dont know how to check the CDI :S - The CDI decides when to fire?
