Jack5r Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Is it possible to buy kevlar on it's own and attach it to your own jeans?I'm guessing;1) No, as it is woven with the demin as they are first made.2) Yes, as they are just normal jeans with peices of kevlar carefully sawn onto sections. If the latter, then I guess it would all come down to the specific type of stitching used. Is there a name as I know a seamstress. Thanks Quote
Pete Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 First one - no because the kevlar strands are mixed in with the cotton when it's created. The seams are stronger than regular jeans as well so they don't fall apart in a scrape Quote
Jack5r Posted October 11, 2009 Author Posted October 11, 2009 Thought so Was looking forward to kevlaring some levis lol.Is there a chart anywhere which shows how resistant each material/thickness of material is at different speeds? It would be nice to know for example if this jumper (for the summer) would be ok at 30 but not at 40. http://www.dragginjeans.net/product/k-shirt Quote
Bogof Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 The ones I have looked at have had patches of kevlar woven material added in at strategic points, the jeans themselves are fairly standard, apart from reinforced stitching in seams. Draggin' Jeans look, feel and wear just like a normal pair of jeans. The Kevlar® is a soft non-abrasive material which dissipates heat and allows air to flow through the fibres. Safety stitching in the seam of the jeans at the time of manufacture ensures the Kevlar® will not move or slip from position. And this quote seems to support what I thought to be the case. I haven't looked at other makes so maybe Draggin' Jeans add patches where others use a composite material? Quote
asharin Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Mohar jeans use kevlar patches too. Work fine too, even the denim survived sliding along the road Quote
Guest Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 your seamstress would need one hell of a needle to stitch kevlar... be easier to make pockets to insert armour into.. Quote
Bogof Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 This page might be of usehttp://www.ixion.org.uk/faq/kevlar.html Quote
TC1474 Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 You can buy Kevlar sheets, I have just got to put my thinking cap on and remember where I obtained it from.If I can't remember, I will go into the attic and look on the packaging As an alternative go to http://www2.dupont.com/Kevlar/en_US/index.htmlKevlar was invented by DuPont and they have a sales and distribution base here in the UK, they will certainly be able to help you.
