'Graunching' Chain

The Drain

Ok, I'm not sure graunching is a real word!

A few days ago I noticed my bike was making a few graunching noises, a sort or rattling snatchy grabby noise, especially when pulling away or after changing gear. It actually sounded as if something was loose, but I have checked around and found nothing.

So I decided that perhaps the chain was loose, and it did seem to be a little slack. I adjusted it up a little, not too much but it is now on the tighter side of the scale rather than the slack.

And all I have done is turned the noise from an irregular sound when pulling away to a regular one that gets more frequent the faster I go. Could it be something funny with the chain itself? I shall loosen it off slightly tomorrow just incase I have nipped it up too tight.

Otherwise I am stumped, and would be very grateful for any advice.

sounds like it could be a tight link, or two. If you can get your bike on a paddock stand or mainstand, revolve rear wheel by hand backwards. Keep an eye on the chain as it leaves the sprocket, if you have stiff links, they should show themselves here. Im my experience that is!! Normally characterised by the links looking like they want to stick the sprocket. Assuming this is the case and you don't have an underlying problem elsewhere, it may be possible to free the links with a couple of pair of pliers. Free the offending links up, re lube, and see how you go.

And have you read this?
