Hi guys (and girls), I have a 2-stroke lil scooter and want to know the best way of DIY carbon deposit cleaning in the exhaust without burning it all. I have heard that oven cleaner works, but I am not sure and would like some advise.

Also, I have a REALLY n00by question which im pretty sure I know the answer too, but I would rather ask it because if I am wrong it will cost me.

If I was to use oven cleaner, its flamable so would this harm the exhaust if it is not cleaned off, or would it simply burn away and theexhaust would handle the heat? As I said, nooby question, but I really dont want my bike going up in flames since I am not covered for fire on insurance.

Thanks in advance guys n girls.

from the good old days when i had a stinker (2 stroke)

get some caustic soda and some rubber gloves. (CORROSIVE) any supermarket or General DIY store.

remove exhaust, fill with diluted caustic soda solution (soda and water) and leave for 12/24 hours, rinse after use.

helps if you can bung the end, or just turn the sliencer/expansion chamber over part way to do the other side, solution that comes out will be black, so you know its done something...

Yea, 2-strokes are great for learning basic maintanance because if it all goes wrong it should e cheap to replace (however I want to avoid that since I have no money at the moment - and I thought we where getting out of the recession?)

Anyway, to rinse it, I guess I would ue water, then run it straight away to evaporate the water or what? because I have just cured the outside of surface rust and REALLY DO NOT want the inside rusting up aswell..

Oh, and thanks for the advise :)

just insert a garden hose and let it run out for a while, but turn to rinse the other side, then stand up to let the water drain from inside, you may wish to do this and then turn the otherway up incase any baffles were holding water ,

it will give off a bit of white smoke / water vapour when ran, at first but this is normal.

which 2 stroke is it?

and are you doing the silencer/ does it have baffle packing? as you will need to remove this or it will soak up the cleaning agent. (mainly trials / crossers)

Don't to forget to also wear some eye protection as well as the gloves, getting a splash of caustic soda in in the eye does not bear thinking about.

It looks pretty much like this

Marsey's comment is true, if you can get some goggles too, there quite cheap from DIY shops..

with the end can, i would pour in a little water, about a cup full, and see if it pours out again,

if so, the there is no packing,

if not there is and its soaked up the water.,

ermm.. I may be wrong, since i have no idea what packing is, but surely water is not ment to be in the exhaust so if it is soaked up it is a bad thing?

packing is fitted to muffle the noise/sound waves, some bikes have it, some don't

a cup of water won't take long to evaporate, out of the packing if there is some, it's better than having the whole thing soaked in caustic soda, packing is fibreglass wool.

you may not have such a thing, but i remember my MTX50 having it, but my GT200X5 and SB200 didn't..
