Some motorcycle clothes do not come with back protectors. I'd advise getting one for obvious reasons. You can either buy an insert that goes into the pocket inside the jacket (some don't have a pocket!) or buy a "dedicated" back protector that you strap on every time you go for a ride.

I use a dedicated one as they're more substantial than the insert style ones. There are two levels of protection, level 1 and level 2, with level 2 being the better :thumb:

This is the one I have. It's called a Knox Contour and is very snug, I wouldn't be without it now (feel weird if I forget to put it on!) The Contour comes in two types, one for general street use where it only extends down to your lower back, and a race version that covers your arse (literally!). The race on would be no good on the street because it'd get pushed up your back because of the upright riding position, as opposed to leaning over the tank on a track.

Its by choice, you can buy separate protectors that you put on under the jacket.

I've tried them and i always find them to long, when I sit on the bike they get pushed up. Check out somewhere like hein gerick there pretty helpful and will let you try them on under your jacket.

Just remember to take your leathers with you when you go to buy a back protector... Don't want to buy one then find you can't zip your jacket up!! :D

I believe the Forcefield back protectors are fairly thin and renowed for being some of the best.

go to somewhere that will fit the protector for you, sounds like the ones you were trying were to big, you can get smaller ones...

i have one and wont ride without it. use knox myself, the forcefield ones seem a little flimsy IMO.

Both willow and I wear back protectors, she has a forcefield one and I have the knox contour.

Make sure you take your lid as well as your jacket, you need to put it all on, then get into your usual riding position. One of my mates who races, didnt do this and found that once crouched over the back protector rode up and pushed into the back of his lid !!!!!

I dont ride without mine now, it feels natural to have it on.

I've got one in my leather jacket and whilst I suspect it's ok, I would prefer to have a purpose-built knox (or similar) back & chest protector.

I have tried quite a few, suppose I should persevere and find one. Find them too hot as well! Would prefer to wear one!

There is a great set of videos on YouTube regarding choosing a back protector and why one is better than another. They are by the sportbiketrackgear. This may be removed as advertising, but they are a US firm so no use to us but their videos are very helpful in deciding which kit to buy in my opinion.

I'm going to buy the new Forcefield sub4 back protector tomorrow, I've been doing without one for a while now because I've been waiting for this model to be released (my local bike gear shop only got them in on Friday).

The general consensus amongst my riding buddies is that a back protector of some description is essential, you need something beyond the shitty piece of foam that many bike jackets provide.

Hi Ruthie...

Not taking the pee here, but I understand you are below 5ft in height. I will see if I can find a link for you, but I do know one company makes childrens back projectors. It might be worth looking into. You may find one that fits.

EDIT: You have a PM Ruthie!!
