Guest Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 Hi All,I was about to enquire about a (rather) cheap CBR125, 2005, accident damaged. However, being the cautious type and all too aware of the old adage "If it's too good...", I thought there might be something a little more wrong with the bike than what the seemingly reputable dealer had stated on the advert.Anyway, I put a photo of the bike's back-end into Photoshop after a hunch about frame damage. I've added a straight line from the centre yoke nut to the back of the bike and, well, you can see for yourself...http://www.minusdesign.co.uk/cbr_125_wonky.jpgBeing a newbie, I was asking you folks for your opinion on the state of that rear swinging arm/frame. As you can see, the line runs true all the way along the top of the body, yet the back wheel is way off centre. The exhaust also seems a long way from the swinging arm. The advert states that the 'rear mudguard is twisted' - again, you can see from the line that the mudguard is actually in the right place. Is this one to avoid, or is it worth spending a little time on, even if the frame is damaged? Many thanks. Guest Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 you would need a replacement frame and then to systematically remove the front end, and swinger/shock, then engine and body work, it is do-able, but with the right now-how and a ready frame would take a weekend.how much experience do you have, availablity and cost of a new frame, space to do the work, and then re-registering bike with MOT, unless it is an absolute bargain, i'd move on, I fixed mine but sold it on. skatefreak Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 That bike is bent haha.Nah, i'd stay away from it if i were you, as much as i love projects i wouldnt consider buying a project bike unless u already have one running.Unless they are absoloutly giving it away and you can get a frame from somewhere then look else were.supprising they would sell it on like that?!regards-Jvr Quote
Guest Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 Ah, brilliant, thanks for the replies folks. I haven't ridden since I was a teen (20-odd years ago) so I'm starting from scratch here. With that in mind, I'd like it to be a good experience and not some saga of hassle and cost.I'd still like a project though, so I'm on the lookout for a road-ready (but TLC-needy) TZR, CBR or similar. I'm just scouring the web for reviews and feedback at the moment; seeing what's good for parts availability etc. Thanks again Quote
Bill_on_a_bike Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 TZRs and CBRs are quite different bikes, primarily 4 stroke and 2 stroke. Quote
Guest Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 TZRs and CBRs are quite different bikes, primarily 4 stroke and 2 stroke.Yeah, I was aware of that much (just about!). I've been reading that 4 strokes are generally more reliable and 2 strokes generally have a better performance when it comes to tuning and speed etc. I'm leaning towards 4 stroke although I'm more familiar tinkering with 2 strokes and an old friend had a TZR which provoked much envy...Also, I'm not fussed about derestriction and whatnot - I've always favoured quality and reliability over boy racer-ism, but that said, I don't want something that's gutless.Cheers.
