apatia77 Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 Hi guys,I bought a 2006 Honda CBF600 last week, the bike had service done 11 or 12 months ago. There were quite few parts changed as the receipt shows nearly £500, since then the bike has only done 1000 miles (and I've done about 100 now).Bike has only got 8500miles on the clock, and it was serviced 3 times now I think (need to check the booklet). What do I do now, change oil only, ride it for few months then change oil+ something, or do some full service in few months.I've spend all my money on this bike now so expensive service is out of question. Also how often should I change engine oil or do some service on my bike. Thanks for all your advice. j4ff Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 I usually service mine once a year or 3000 mile which ever comes first.(think its 4k in the manual)Basic oil/filter change i will do myself. If its a major service checking shims/valve clearences and other technical stuff ill take it to a garage. It will tell you in your service manual the intervals and type of service.Probably 4k between, which will mean a minor service at 12k oil/filters/break fluid and a major service at 16k. Guest Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 if the bikes only done 1100 miles, then a minor service will dooil and filter (and sump plug washer), try wemoto.com for parts, always had a good level of service from them. make a note on the invoice of the date and mileage when the parts were fitted and keep with your service paperwork.. also give the bike a good check over things like bulbs, pads, rust (even on a H*nda), chain etc...or ask a workshop to do an oil / filter change use non franchise as its cheaper labour ££ Quote
techno Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 You could change oil now so you know when it was last done and then do it in 12 months, My zx6 did 20000 miles without an oil change was ok, I only mention this as I believe as do others that service intervals for most modern bikes are well over cautious and you shouldnt be scared to miss minor service intervals....but thats also because i dont like paying for 2 services a year.Oh and that was backed up by a dealership. But its all personel choice. Guest Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 I change the oil every 2-3k miles and filter every other oil change... the way I see it is that its cheap and is probably one of the best things you can do to keep the engine running sweet and your gear changes slick Quote
Phill_vtr Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 I do mine as and when. I try to do the oil every 4000 miles on the commuter bike and once a year on the VTR which doesn't do many miles. I always do oil and filter together and the airfilter is cleaned once a year on the vtr (K+N) and about the same on the cockroach.I do the fork oil every other year (more often on the vtr as it goes through the occasional seal) and brake fluid once a year (but I have a habit of changing calipers and master cylinders and things) Coolant, I only change if it leaks and bearings, wheels, tyres, forks, lights etc I check fairly often on the cockroach, every month or so.This is just the way I do things, not a recommendation and is based on my usage. I also go with Techno on the belief that service schedules are over cautious and as such don't mind going over the distance on the cockroach. If I do a trackday then all the above changes and I will thoroughly check everything before hand and change the oil.
