rm 250 backfire

My RM250 93 it had low compression and it was hard to start. So I done a top end rebuild and I replaced the piston, rings, wrist pin, circlips, top end bearing and top end gasket set and it still had bad compression so I took of the top end to see what I done wrong. The piston rings were damaged so I put in my old rings and it has much better compression but could have better compression. So then I tried to start it and it started in 1-2 kick and stayed on 10 second and stalled on me so I tired to start it and I was so close to starting it up but then it backfired on me and could get it going so I took of the top end again made sure every thing is right put it back together started it up in 1-2 kick then stayed on for 10 seconds and stalled on me. Then I tried to start it up and it backfired again after couple of day later I tried to start it up and the same thing happened got it going for 10 second and stalled tried to start it up got so close of getting it going and backfired.

What does it mean if it backfire just before it starts up? Could it be timing or some thing like that?

Any help would be appreciated.
