Guest Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Practice practice. I would suggest it is a mental block. You will soon get it Quote
iiisecondcreep Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Are you doing it in 2nd or 3rd gear?I could not get up to speed at all in 2nd gear, managed first time (and every time after!) no problem in 3rd. Quote
Stuno1 Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Must be a mental thing...Personally i would not do the test if i was not confident in all the areas to be tested. It will just get you down mate.Stu Quote
Yoshi Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 if it helps, the way i do mine is to come out the corner and open it right up to well above the speed, then use the back brake a little before the speed trap to control the bike Quote
iiisecondcreep Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 yeah 2nd, my bike will do 75 in second so there is no reason why i cant do it. mental block I´ll have another go tomorrow....... I did DAS also, the 500 could easily do it in 2nd I just found it far easier in 3rd. Your bike would probably do 50+ in 1st, but that doesn't mean you should do the manoeuvre in 1st! It was on my instructors advice that I tried it in third, and like I said- after not having managed in 2nd I managed first time in 3rd. If the bike is third you are not have to accelarate/rev as hard and you have ample time and space to get to speed and make use of 3rd gear and the manoeuvre will be smoother. Quote
rennie Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 It really is down to practice and confidence!keep at it! you'll be fine!your instructor should tell you if you're not ready!personally I think you're making a mistake doing it on your own bike!too worried about dropping it! Quote
iiisecondcreep Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Good luck and let us know how you get on Quote
Colin937 Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Stay in 2nd gear it's another thing to do when your trying to stop having to drop 2 gears. Your bike will be fine in second gear. carry as much speed round the bend as you can, open it up a bit to get you to the speed, dont touch a break till your through the trap ,off the throttle swerve. get breaking. (get the bike straightend up before touching the brakes). Dont worry you'll be fine on the day i'll keep my fingers crossed for you Quote
DeeJ Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 I normally panic when it comes to tests etc. But when I did my MOD 1, I just had a mind block and just went with a clear head. Didn't think about that I had learnt just did what the instructor said. And I went all out at the speed trap and actually went through the speed trap at 61mph, and swerved with ease. It's just a case of thinking, this is easy and telling yourself, I could do this at 100mph, then when your going at a slower speed 31mph, then it just seems so easy. Quote
dfrbrowne Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Hi Kirsty,I failed my mod 1 twice on the swerve, kept kicking the inside cone over, after the 2nd test my instructor had been watching...You arms are too straight, whether its nerves or not just bend you elbows then when you push for the counter steer you'll do it ok.At the moment with your arms straight you may push to counter steer but the bikes not moving as your opposite arm is straight and so the effect is not the same.So I just made sure my elbows were bent got up to speed and it seemed to work.Hope that helps Quote
iluvbikes Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 bring ur knees in tight to the tank and glide relax and it will happen dont think u have to panic about it i lernt from getting close to drains on the road and swerving around them doing 30 mph then 40 Quote
cruz Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 This will sound hard but, IMHO there is a lot of crap talked about the stops and swerve, you very likely have had cause to do this during day to day riding (I know I have). Just try to block out the fact that you are being observed and ride in a relaxed way as you would on the road. Yep I know, easy for me to say I have never had to do it. But I have had to swerve at 70+ on the M4 to avoid a car bonnet at night (not what you want to see as you pull into the outside lane to pass an artic on a l/h bend).Good luck I am sure you will pass. I´ve done it loads of times avoiding the million F*^*ing potholes in my town, drain covers, gravel etc etc all at about 30 ish MPH, so its all in the head i think this part of the mod 1 is a very good add on cos it will help u lern u can do it and show u the bike can do it Quote
