stevie16v Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Still working away on the project xj 600 s divi. Today got the new tyre valves on, gave it a wee run up and down the driveway. It smelled quite strongly of fuel. So I turned the mix down a little bit. Still doing it. Also, i decided to check oil etc, Couldnt see anything in the window, popped the filler cap. Uh-oh white gunk all over it and down in the clutch housing, pop out the clutch rod and ended up with the below. im now worried something is seriously wrong, left it a couple of hours hanging out, came back and its pretty much dry, thinking its maybe been condesation in it. Anyone got any ideas? or give me a step for a hint on anything else to checkhttp://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq88/stevie16v/IMG_0215.jpg Quote
Guest Hodgy Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 It's water that's mixed with the oil that causes the emulsion. If the Divvy is air cooled then it will just be condensation caused by not letting the engine get up to temperature so the condensation evaporates. Quote
Horseynat30101 Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 My bf has a divvy and gets the same on his oil "cap" think he said it was just condensation as they're air cooled if that helps Quote
cypek Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I had the same on my Ninja recently. Turned out it was condensation due to me riding only to work and back (10 miles each way). I've changed oil and did a few longer runs and it is now clean Quote
stevie16v Posted March 30, 2011 Author Posted March 30, 2011 Phew, Didnt think about that, Knew it was water mixed with oil that caused it, but was concerned maybe petrol did too. Ill give it a run with fresh cheap oil, then do a full oil change with good stuff.Any suggestion re the smell of petrol? No obvious signs of leaks. Can smell it more as the bike is revved Quote
whitedevil Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 You'll smell it if it was petrol and you'd see the coolant level drop if you had a leak. All you need to do is go for a long ride and get the oil up to temp and the water will evaporate. Quote
stevie16v Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 It just keeps getting better. the plugs for cylinder 3 and 4 are black/oily. Any ideas and ways to check? Also, managed to sheer a clutch pressure plate bolt, was going to fix the rattly clutch basket, didnt have a socket big enough for the main bolt, think its maybe 26-28mm, went a bit too tight putting them back on and sheered one so need a new one of them, fortunately got the stub out no bother Quote
Guest Hodgy Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Perhaps that's the reason you can smell petrol?Could be there not fireing properly or the carbs have sticky choke maybe? Quote
stevie16v Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 carbs should be ok as i stripped and fully refurbed them, Choke seems to be ok aswell, responding appropriately when open/closed. Someone has suggested coil pack to me since its both 3 and 4 Quote
Guest Hodgy Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 If it was the coil it would be mis-fireing, you could always swap the coils over and see if the problem moves to the other two cylinders? Quote
stevie16v Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 Just been reading up on it. The coils are split inot 1+4 and 2+3 so that pretty much rules that theory out. I'd noticed the bike had a small oil drip coming from the top end of the engine at the front. It might be coming together now. Rocker cover gasket could cause that, and also cause oil to leak into the engine which would cause my smoky start ups and the petrol seeping through into the oil? would i be right in saying that? Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 the rocker cover gasket keeps the oil in the engine but a leaking one will mean you get oil around the joint but that wont allow it to get in around the cylinders to burn.if the plugs on 3 and 4 are going black then you need to check carb settings and mixture settings also possibly float height settings if they are wrong could be allowing to much fuel in carbs hence running rich and blackening the plugs Quote
stevie16v Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 I guess the carbs will be coming off for about the 9th time! lolIt took me 3 sets of carbs as well as my own to build a fully working set....Or so i thought lolRight, carbs off again and ill check float height etc and hope for the best. Im hoping to slight oil drip is maybe just a slight leak from the carb heater pipes thats maybe run through a little bit Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 check the mixture screws on the carbs as well make sure carbs 3 and 4 are not in futher than one and 2 normall basic setting is about 1 1/2 to 2 turns out on all four Quote
stevie16v Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 I had them out at that, But then turned them all in a slight bit aswell incase it was fuelling too much. It starts without too much choke aswell so thought maybe it was running rich. I'll get them off at some point and adjust the float height. I'll hope for the best Quote
rennie Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I'd get it going, take it for a good thrashing then see what's what Quote
stevie16v Posted April 1, 2011 Author Posted April 1, 2011 Thanks for your help as always folks. Got my In laws friend coming over next week to have a look, Forgot about him. He reckons it's a fuelling issue so hopefully get it sorted and on the road Quote
