Imho it keeps you on your toes, if you know the route, then you become complacent and don't think about what you should be :)

Would tend to agree, if you learn the routes you might end up concentrating too hard on areas you expect to be tricky and miss out on key observations or unexpected hazards.

cheers huys, i got test on friday and havent done any routes yet , intructor if i want we will go on saturday so i dont totally go to bits in a unfamiliar area , im even using google earth to look at the town centres and teh roads around darlington lol
