hi all.been thinking(which is normally a bad thing for me.OK been talking to the instructor about having lessons for my mod 1 and the cost seems to be getting out of hand.we were looking at two three hour lessons plus a three hr lesson to include getting too and from the test center, and it seems that getting a test on a Saturday will take weeks n weeks so i would need a day off work (I'm self employed so no work no pay).all in all the 20 min mod one test + day off + lessons will cost me over £400.and then we can think about lessons for the mod 2.now am i right in thinking that if i pass on a 125 i can ride a 33bhp bike ? and am i right in thinking that most 250s fall in that category.if so I'm seriously thinking about getting a 125 practicing for the mod one and doing it off my own back and then after getting some experience on the road having as few lessons as possible and doing my mod 2 ,sell the 125 n get a 250 .I'm not mean and i do expect people to earn a living but it just seems a lot of money just to pass the mod 1 .how many on here have passed it with out having lessons ,the test itself looks simple with practice.

You can easily pass it on your own without all that expense, obviously training is a good thing, but there are also alot of free things to help pass it. You are right if pass on 125, restricted for 2 years to max 33bhp. All depends how quick you want a big bike. I personally did it all myself with just help of forums and a book, Learn to ride, and this was because could not afford all the lessons etc. Plus plenty of practice on a 125. End of the day best to go with what feels most comfortable for you.

Is the book "learn to ride" still worth it?

Does it cover most of the bases for what you need for your mod 2 test?

I might buy it...

Ive passed the theory test. So just mod1 and mod2 (and i know the book was published before mod1 and 2 were brought in). But the basics of riding on the road must still be the same with a few additions like independent riding.

£400 quid for mod1???? bloody hell bells, ive spent that and i do mod2 on friday!

well yes ,i was going to have two three hr lessons at £ 30 per hr then another three hr lesson to do the test thats £270 then the test plus a day off work which would be over £400.this seems to be a very expensive hobby .OK the instructor said that depending on how i got on with the 500 i could spend some of the time on road practicing for my mod 2 ,but still expensive.it seems that the way to get a bike license is to book a 5 / 6 day course and have a week off work and hope that you pass all 4 parts of the bike test ,that would cost me about £1.300 .i have passed my cbt and my theory but i would still be looking at a 4 day course ?

best hope you pass mod 2 first time, cos if that require redoing its really gonna cost you some wonga , 80 a test , then maybe a lesson to correct your mistake, then hire of the bike for couple of hours...£170 ish a time?

yes i know thats why I'm thinking of getting a 125, get riding experience and perhaps do the mod one off my own back OK it'll mean I'm stuck with a 250 but that will do me for work and the odd ride out

I would ring round for more quotes tbh.

£400 is very very very very very steep for mod 1!!!

My mod 1 cost me £265 and that was with failing it once as well!

The local company to me, the only one who does the DAS, charge £337 for the course and then your test fees on top! That ammount includes 1 mod 1 transport and hire and 1 mod 2 transport and hire!

one of the probs is i would have too have a day off work that adds over £100 to the bill.i suppose most people have that problem .i just wont to get on a bike ,even a 125

I am also self employed.

To be honest you should be looking at 2-3 hours at the most for mod 1 training, as its not very hard to do!

Maybe another day, or even just half a day to do the training for the mod 2 and you should be away!

I did 2 hours training for mod 1, failed it, but didnt do any further training, as i failed it purely cos of me own nerves!

Did 2 hours training this afternoon for mod 2 and thats in for me test! lol

you see i have nothing to gage my riding abilities on,the last time i went out on a bike was last November when i did my CBT.and i didn't enjoy that .so perhaps as i have said rather than book loads of lessons the money would be better spent on an old 125 just so i could get some confidence .and then have the minimum amount of lessons for the test .I'm now going to ask a very silly question ( i think) ,if after passing on a 125 i bought lets say a 500 ,would it drive like a pig if it were restricted ?.is it possible to live with a restricted bike.

well going from a 11bhp to a bike with a maximum 33 bhp, should feel fine, plenty of people on here have restricted bikes it aint a problem

33bhp feels amazing at first (from 11bhp  ), but you soon long for more

Could you not do your lessons on the weekend when you're not working (assuming you work a mon-fri week)?

its the test that is a problem not the lessons .it seems that getting a test on a Saturday might take weeks AND I JUST WANT TO GET ON A BIKE

You mentioned a couple of times that you were thinking of a 250? Any reason why? If you pass your test on a 125 you can ride any bike rstricted to 33bhp.

i didn't think you were. :D i just NEEEEEEED to get on a bike ,i even thought of getting my push bike out of the shed,OK i didn't but i thought about it .but thought id look a bit silly with my crash helmet on :D
