AdeyT Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Did an oil change a few months ago on my 01 ZZR600 after an off and a cracked generator case. Replaced the case and followed the instructions in the Haynes manual, the bike was on it's centre stand on a level surface. After putting fresh oil in I let the bike idle for a minute then stand for a few minutes, checked the oil sight glass and the level was bang on inbetween the markers.A few days ago I was cleaning the bike and noticed the oil had completely filled the sight glass, this was an hour after riding the bike so still warmish and on a level surface. the next morning with the bike cold it had gone down very slightly but was still way too high so I drained about a third of a litre to bring the level down to just above halfway.Over the last couple of days I have been keeping an eye on the level, hot and cold and it's up and down but this morning it was very low near the bottom of the sight glass. I don't think it's leaking as there is no oil on the floor where it's parked overnight Sorry for the long post, don't know if I'm doing something wrong and would appreciate any advice. Quote
megawatt Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Oil is normally checked cold mate. If it's in the sightglass at the correct level just before you ride it, that's correct. If it's not there the following day after being on centre or paddock stand all night you may have a problem, but I wouldn't worry if it's not leaking or burning it Quote

megawatt Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Good man! I don't usually replace the crush washer, just add a bit of silicone sealant. After you drain the oil, filter it through a fine guaze or paper filter. Have a look for metal bits, just in case. Also check magnetic sump plug if it has one. Quote

megawatt Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 I did say "Normally" and logically it's the way to do it. Give it all night to run down the oil ways and camchain tunnel into the sump. If the engine has just been run, some of it is all over the engine? Anyway Yamahas aren't normal or logical Quote
chiz Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Some bikes oil level sight glass refers to when the bike is on it's side stand (NSR125), some when it's upright. Can cause a headache if you're not sure which and end up over filling Quote
AdeyT Posted April 11, 2011 Author Posted April 11, 2011 Thanks for all the replies, got some more oil and the washer and will have a good read of the bike and haynes manual. Quote
