megawatt Posted December 13, 2011 Share Posted December 13, 2011 Could be your symptoms, OK up to 3000 revs whilst on pilot jet and then nothing when the main jet is uncovered by the needle. giocast Posted December 13, 2011 Share Posted December 13, 2011 There are many symptoms as a result of gummed up carbs Don, from not wanting to idle/erratic idle (can be primary or idle mixture circuit or water in the float bowl(s)) to a midrange or high range stumble/misfire or hesitation (which can be partially blocked main jet). (might even be injected for all I know!) if it's got carbs and you can get to them, most have a provision for draining the float chamber(s) (if you can get to the bottom of them ). Obviously if you're not confident then don't do it - but what comes out can give you a clue what's happening. There could be rust and there could be water (and it only takes a few droplets to cause havoc at idle) or they might be clear. If it's a four cylinder and the first one you try is clear then you might not decide to persevere with the others. Don't overtighten the drain plug as they can strip if you're not careful. megawatt Posted December 14, 2011 Share Posted December 14, 2011 Take carb off, carefully dismantle it, clean out ALL fuel and air ways with brake cleaner, rebuild, fit to bike and test. You'd notice the difference as it wud sound rough A duff plug would give you the same thing,, a blocked or partially blocked jet & the bike wont go,, or will tick over, but will suffer fuel starvation when the throttle is opened, this will cause erratic & lumpy running with a severe loss of power,,, before you start striping carbs, change the plugs first,,, Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Colin the Bear Posted December 14, 2011 Share Posted December 14, 2011 Yes yes. Clean the plugs. Their condition can tell you what's happening in the combustion chamber. Before you start stripping carbs and getting out of your depth, run some carb cleaner through the fuel system.
