mr1 Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Hi,my 98 fazer has a misfie but only when it gets hot, plugs are good.any help would be appreciated, thanks Quote
Tango Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Welcome to the Forum mate....... Why not introduce yourself when you get a mo...... What sort of misfire? Is it when revving high.....or when pulling from lower revs?My immediate thought is Coils/Coil Pack depending on what is fitted to your bike.........could also be fuelling....fuel injected or Carb?Give us a bit more info on the misfire and what your bike is running (Carb/FI...Aftermarket exhaust....etc) and we'll see if we can help you out...... mr1 Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 Hi,my names mark,my bike has carbs an after market can but always did have before the misfire,it misses from low down the revs but once I rev it hard seem to disappear Quote
Stu Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 sounds like a coil breaking down once it warms up to me! Quote
Tango Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 sounds like a coil breaking down once it warms up to me! Damn you Stu......I did all that typing and you beat me to it....... Yep....I agree with Stu......my money would go on a coil breaking down..... Quote
mr1 Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 Thanks, any way of knowing which one or should I just replace both ? Quote
Fozzie Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 You generally get them as a set and I'd always replace both at the same time.Saw this on a couple of bikes, mainly old XJ6's seem to blow them quite often and old Yamaha's in general. Quote
mr1 Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 cheers mate,I know that there not cheap but hey ho Quote
Stu Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 I would still only do the one They aren't sided so you can just get one and try it on each side unless they have fixed wires and lengths then you need to find out which side it is You can usually tell by plug colour Quote
mr1 Posted January 28, 2013 Author Posted January 28, 2013 Thanks guys, just found some on the internet 70 quid for the pair,so gonna just replace both, they don't come with plug caps tho do you think I should replace those as well Quote
Stu Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 depends on the condition of the ones fitted if they look good and have a good connection then they should be fine Quote
Tango Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Funny....but my car was in for a service and MOT today....and they've upgraded the coil packs because of misfire issues with these cars.....exactly as OP experienced on the bike.....low rev misfire...but OK when revved.£70 a pair is reasonable.....but maybe change the caps and leads as well if they aren't too expensive....just to save any possible future trouble.....prevention is better than cure...... mr1 Posted February 16, 2013 Author Posted February 16, 2013 Hey peeps, just fitted my new coils and still no better,in fact seems a bit worse, does any know what spark plug caps I need can't seem to find them anywhere on internet, getting proper stressed Quote
mr1 Posted February 16, 2013 Author Posted February 16, 2013 Yeah looked last night and 1 and 4 caps are both arcing to head Quote
Tiggie Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 oops, I deleted my post after you replied! caps are cheap, about £3 or £4 usually. you can find out what cap you need on the ngk website, you just need the part number of your spark plug which is usually printed on the white porcelainn Quote
Tango Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 This may be the correct type plug cap....but just double check your plug type prefix as this is for 12mm plugs.....but they also do them for 14mm plugs:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SD05F-NGK-Plu ... vi-contentI copied this off another site....which may help with troubleshooting....... mr1 Posted February 25, 2013 Author Posted February 25, 2013 Hey fella's thanks for all the info, fitted new plug caps and only slightly better,a mechanic mate suggested stripping down the the carbs, any more suggestions would be welcome as I'm not sure if that's beyond my capabilities lol Quote
Fozzie Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 You did swap the spark plugs when you did this didnt you? Also if coils go they can sometimes break the ECU as has happened across a couple of bikes. So i'd replace that as a matter of course Cheap one can be found on ebay Quote
mr1 Posted February 27, 2013 Author Posted February 27, 2013 thanks fozzie, yeah I did change the plugs, going to get an ecu,but before I do I'm gonna change air filter as hasn't been done since I've owned the bike that's about 4 years lol, also its been sitting all winter with only a small amount of fuel in it so gonna empty that out and put in some fresh juice, just so bloody cold at the mo and I ain't got a garage Quote
Fozzie Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 4 Years!!! Think you need to service the whole lot then check again to see if the misfire is there! I'd be doing valves, filters, oil and plugs. Quote
mr1 Posted March 1, 2013 Author Posted March 1, 2013 Lol,it's had oil,oil filter and plugs every year just not air filter Quote
mr1 Posted March 2, 2013 Author Posted March 2, 2013 Right chaps,I have fitted new coils, spark plugs and caps, new air filter, bike is much better but not perfect,it ticks over and rides fine warm or cold, did fifty odd miles this morning and ir only misfired a couple of times,I'm now well stumped :| ol yeah I spoke to a mechanic and he said if the ecu/cdi unit was at fault the bike probably wouldn't run :/ Quote
