Ben_E Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 (edited) What's the best stuff to use to lubricate a clutch cable and the best way to do it? I vaguely remember reading somewhere that fork oil was the best stuff to use but I'm not sure if I'm recalling that correctly. Thanks Edited February 8, 2013 by Ben_E Quote
Tiggie Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 have a look for graphite spray, when it drys it leaves the graphite behind which acts as a dry lube Quote
megawatt Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 So how are you gonna get the graphite spray to go all the way down the cable? Quote
megawatt Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 Hang the cable vertically by one of the nipples. Drip 3in1 onto the top of the cable while pushing the outer up and down. Repeat this until oil appears at the lower nipple. If you have plasticine or blue tack, fashion a funnel at the top and keep it topped up with oil. Quote
Tiggie Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 So how are you gonna get the graphite spray to go all the way down the cable? smart arse!! I have always heard good things about that type of spray which is why I mentioned it, but your way is the tried and tested 'just works' method I suppose Quote
megawatt Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 Sorry mate, graphite is a superb lubricant . but it wouldn't get all the way down the cable! Yes, been using my method with 3in1 for 30odd years. Modern cables are usually PTFE lined , so shouldn't need lubing. Quote
Stu Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 You need a cable oiler to get squirty stuff down it Quote
alexanderfoti Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 I use one of these! Easy as you dont need to take the cables off the bike:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hydraulic-Mot ... 56516c1a7b Quote

megawatt Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 Yep , a bit slower on the bike, but moving the cable up and down will eventually produce oil at the lower end. Quote
Donnie Brasco Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 When I lube mine I take the lever off and spray some gt85 into it,works fine Quote
