car lube? In a bike?

Question

Do you buy special bike grease or do you use the same stuff as you would for cars?

Majority of oils are the same its a marketing ploy so you spend more money on stuff you don't need

no but I wear a motorcycle helmet rather than a bicycle one...

I just remember a LOT of people saying only use motorcycle oil in a bike. Something to do with the clutch? No?

Some car specific oils have additives in them that can cause clutch slip in the bike (if it has a wet clutch that is)......I think the Magnatec oil is one of those......but don't quote me.....

Your spot on bob

Its the more expensive oils that would cost you more then bike oil so you wouldn't buy it anyway

Back in the day I can't remember there being specific bike oils......it was Castrol GTX all the way.... 8-)

Some guys used to put Castrol R in their bikes.....which used to smell nice.....but on a non-race bike it didn't do a lot of good.....particularly at lower temperatures.....

So this specific bike oil thing hasn't been around that long I don't think.....although I do tend to use it myself these days......Motul 5100......just makes the gearbox on the trumpet a bit less clunky......

I use castrol gtx now

Used it for the last 3 to 4 years and costs me about 10 quid for 4 litres

No problems at all and that's on a bike with a lot of torque

I use Wilkinsons semi synthetic at £14 for five litres.

Back in the day I knew a London despatch rider who used to use Winfield car oil (That was the name Woolworths used for own brand products) and he ran a GT550 up to 250,000 miles without problems.

Well Car Lube is actually the brand...

But anyway, like the guys have stated, all this special bike oil is a gimmic..

A few years back one of the American mags (Cycle, I think) did some extensive long term testing and research into car and motorcycle specific oils and came to the conclusion that the only difference was the price.
