CG nuts Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Just been given 4.55 l of Carlube 10w40 semi- synth . Would it be ok to use in my CG ? Quote
Tango Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 You could use chip oil in a CG and it wouldn't complain.... Quote
CG nuts Posted March 22, 2013 Author Posted March 22, 2013 Going to use it , thanks. Might try pilchard oil after Quote
Stu Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 car lube? In a bike? Question Do you buy special bike grease or do you use the same stuff as you would for cars? Majority of oils are the same its a marketing ploy so you spend more money on stuff you don't need Quote
mealexme Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 no but I wear a motorcycle helmet rather than a bicycle one...I just remember a LOT of people saying only use motorcycle oil in a bike. Something to do with the clutch? No? Quote
Tango Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Some car specific oils have additives in them that can cause clutch slip in the bike (if it has a wet clutch that is)......I think the Magnatec oil is one of those......but don't quote me..... Quote
Stu Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Your spot on bob Its the more expensive oils that would cost you more then bike oil so you wouldn't buy it anyway Quote
Tango Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Back in the day I can't remember there being specific bike oils......it was Castrol GTX all the way.... Some guys used to put Castrol R in their bikes.....which used to smell nice.....but on a non-race bike it didn't do a lot of good.....particularly at lower temperatures..... So this specific bike oil thing hasn't been around that long I don't think.....although I do tend to use it myself these days......Motul 5100......just makes the gearbox on the trumpet a bit less clunky...... Quote
Stu Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 I use castrol gtx now Used it for the last 3 to 4 years and costs me about 10 quid for 4 litres No problems at all and that's on a bike with a lot of torque Quote
Smokin Joe Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 I use Wilkinsons semi synthetic at £14 for five litres. Back in the day I knew a London despatch rider who used to use Winfield car oil (That was the name Woolworths used for own brand products) and he ran a GT550 up to 250,000 miles without problems. tommo Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Ok to use the Carlube in the CG, I use car oil in my bike Castrol GTX 10w/40 semi synth £10.00 4 LTRS at Wilkinsons, just avoid Energy conserving oil, these have a sticker on them http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=h ... Y&dur=1453 Quote
Guest Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 car lube? In a bike? Well Car Lube is actually the brand...But anyway, like the guys have stated, all this special bike oil is a gimmic.. Quote
Smokin Joe Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 A few years back one of the American mags (Cycle, I think) did some extensive long term testing and research into car and motorcycle specific oils and came to the conclusion that the only difference was the price. Quote
