hmm they may not be nasty around you but they could be around anyone who is unknown to them. my father has had his since i was nine or ten and at times whenever we were up the park with the dog he would growl at a few people as they walk by. i'm not saying that all of them do this but what i am saying is that 1) they can go from good to bad no matter how good the owner treats them and 2) i wouldn't let any kids go near them despite what the tabloids say.

Classic signs of an under socialised dog who is confused by his position in the "pack hierarchy".

As pups you need to get them out into crowded places and get them used to meeting lots of people. If you Dont do it early enough, you end up with dogs exactly as you describe.

That's one of the reasons that guide dog pups are started very young, and its also where many people go wrong with all breeds of dogs as most people are too busy with work to fully socialise puppies. They take on breeds they think are safe (like labs, spaniels, jack russels etc) Dont bother to socialise them, and then wonder why they have a yappy, snappy, unpredictable dog... Seen it loads in dog training classes where people turn up with a badly behaved adolescent dog expecting to train it to be good... Too little too late in many cases because they never bothered when it was young.

No responsible owner would ever leave any dog unattended with any child. I have a large male rottie and a 16week old daughter. I would never leave them alone, not because I think he would bite (he wouldn't) but because he is a big heavy dog and a bit clumsy too, so could easily squash her without realising!!

Anyone who thinks all rotties will turn and snap with no warning is quite welcome to come and meet mine. I assessed him for nearly 2months before adopting him. Pretty essential when taking on a large breed adult dog to fully understand their temperament.

He goes off lead all the time (in designated areas) will wander up to strangers for some fuss, and if he smells they have dog treats, he will sit perfectly at there feet and wait for them to give him a treat...

He's passed his Bronze and Silver citizen awards (was doing gold but partner had a baby so ran out of time) and meets strange dogs pretty much everyday with no drama. But yet people still have the tabloids view of him because of his breed... Which is their problem, not his ;)

Selene, you come across as a really nice girl. I think you need to walk away. We don't seem to see a lot of good things from your OH.
