Hi all,

I am currently replacing the head gasket on my zxr400, just a few things I need to get my head around.

1)can I re use the head bolts or do they need to be replaced?

2)cam timing information? any information on this would be great as I am clueless haha

3) any general information on replacing head gasket on the zxr400 would be great

Thanks in advance

pretty sure they are stretch bolts and need to be replaced

get a new cam chain as the chain on your L1 will have stretched by now and it will run miles better with a new one

download a manual for the bike the timing is really easy to set on the zxr just follow what it says in the manual

take your time clean everything up and just make sure its all right

I did the camchain on my L1 when I had it and they are a right twat to get the chain out from the bottom sprocket! as there is a piece of solid metal there to stop the chain jumping! it has to be lined up perfect and slid out

or new chain and just cut the old off

bloke who i had it off before i brought it said that he rebuilt the engine, done about 4000 miles since ive had it. still think it is worth changing ?

doesnt sound like he has done a good job!

I think you would be best bunging another motor in personally as your head could be warped hence the leak and steam

for the sake of 30 odd quid I would replace it

they do stretch over time

never heard of one snapping though

i'll be sending the head of to be skimmed and yea true best to do it as it is all out

depends how much material has been taken off

if you take too much off the piston will contact the valves or head

you can get thicker gaskets to compensate but thats usually just for one skim

dont suppose there is a way to tell if it has been skimmed before is there?

if it has then there is 150quid down the drain maybe more :crybaby:
