Got Promoted!

Having a good day!

Get a call out of nowhere to see the big cheese at my company. Go up and see him, starts discussing how he's been going over everyone and selecting those for various things, from relocation, redundancy, to promotion.

I'm slightly worried as a lot of people got a pay cut in my industry (oil industry not having the best luck right now).

But I won't beat around the bush, I got promoted!

I was an associate designer, which is someone who works with other associates under a designer. Now I'm one of the designers

Got my engTECH so I qualify as a Design engineer, so my company are getting me cheap currently. But I was more than chuffed with salary attached to the promotion so won't moan

The temptation to go self-employed is getting horrendous...

Well done fozz man.

What do you design then?

In short:

http://www.iraq-businessnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/oil_refinery-22.jpg

Instrumentation and electrical devices on oil refineries, oil rigs, power stations (including nuclear) and military facilities.

The pipe work, major power lines and structures aren't my discipline. But the pressure vessels, their valves, the control rooms, alarms etc are all stuff I have a hand in :)

I'm also hoping to veer into the aeronautical industry as planes are basically giant flying instruments

The tax you avoid by being self employed will easily buy you a new bike ;)

A HP4 carbon with any luck

If you ever, and I mean ever need anyone to mooch round something like that taking photos - preferably at night, you be sure to let me know! :-)

Congratulations!

I can't recommend being self-employed highly enough. I was always too insubordinate to work for other people, so sooner or later it was always going to be self-employment or unemployment  After 8 years I couldn't ever go back to working for someone else.

I'm hoping to be allowed onto the Sellafield site at some stage, there's a lot of jobs up there and I reckon one could have my name on it. Imagine a nuclear reactor at night!

I did have the pictures of a site visit, along with upwards of 100 urbex visits elsewhere... Then... my laptops hard drive went pop, and clever old me hadn't backed up the files as so many of them were massive RAW files. And I CBA to crawl all over London and Manchesters high buildings and underground bits again. The old bill had enough fun with me on that aspect of the hobby

Congrats Fozzie.......don't let the power corrupt you......

Knowledge is power, guard it wisely

I do confess to the occasional ego stroke, when fresh uni graduates with no engineering experience, to the amusement of the older engineers rank themselves as the same make a cock up and I correct it for them, there's that feeling of satisfaction that while we both have pieces of paper calling us engineers, my job title means they feel a tad embarrassed when they make a slip up

TMBF urbex jaunt anyone?

Depends where you want to go, London is good as the security measures are more relaxed it seems. Less guard dogs too I find in general!

Also I'm not a fan of asbestos, I've had a few run ins with it now, luckily the white long undisturbed kind. But if I see it, I'm walking back out.

Knowledge is indeed power.......I keep explaining this to one of my colleagues, when I drip feed him odd bits of useful information......and he always accuses me of holding stuff back.......so, I have to explain the whole "knowledge is power" concept, and that I need to maintain this to retain my superiority over him......to which he normally replies "f*ck off".......but we have another concept "knowledge is coffee".......I think he owes me about half a dozen lattes now.....and a sticky bun or 2 also......
