nicklucey Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Hi all, recently bought an er5 as a first bike to keep me going while I learn and get an idea for what kind bike I might want when I have a bit more spare cash.Having read an article on mcn about engine noises, for better or for worse, I'm now paranoid about every sound.Generally the engine sounds normal enough to me, and the bike feels fine and solid to ride. The noise I'm unsure about particularly is when I'm braking coming up to a junction and cutting off the throttle, it sounds kind of like if you spin the back wheel of a push bike. It's not there for long and usually only coming off faster roads.Should i be worried? Thanks in advanceSent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk Quote
soll Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 don t worry wheel is still there, might be loose chain/worn sprockets Quote
Gin Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Ok so first things first, have you got the relevant Haynes manual for your bike? They might be a real bugger to follow sometimes but they are the first book any bike owner should have to get them started with maintenance! I would suggest checking the tension of your chain to start with, but in the Haynes there should be a list of basic tasks. If nothing else it will get you to a better understanding with how your bike works! As you say, it might well just be over-worrying but always better to be safe than sorry! Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 check your tyre pressures as well as they can make different noises when low on air Quote
Hoggs Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 As above check the tension of the chain, and move the bike forward (or spin the wheel if you've got it on a stand ) and check along the entire length - mine had stretched terribly in one spot but when I originally checked it the bit I checked was fine Quote
Grumpy Old Git Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Either strap the bicycle wheel down properley or, better yet, remove it completely! Quote
