‘08 XT125R starting & idle issues

Good Afternoon All,

I’ve recently resurrected my old trusty XT125R, due to myself and my partner being down to one car.

I’ve got it running and it’s passed an MOT, however it does need some TLC, cuddles and telling it’s pretty before it starts up.

It was stood for a long time and this is obviously the cause of the issues. It’s a single cylinder carb fuelled beast... or not.

Firstly, getting it going. It basically doesn’t want to. I have to give it a few goes and then rev it quite high before it’ll play ball. I then have to keep it going or it’ll just cut out. So even for the first couple of junctions I have to keep the revs up, otherwise it’ll cut out, up until it gets plenty warm

Secondly, once it’s warmed up, if I blip the throttle whilst stationary, it’ll sometimes stick at much higher revs than idle (17/1800, as per specs) and takes it’s time to drop back down. Sometimes it requires another blip of the throttle to get it to play.

So, solutions?

I’ve adjusted the timing screw, because it was idling around 8000, which for a little 125cc bike was way off.

Other than dismantling and cleaning the carb, what other adjustments could be made?

Not many!

Idling high just after a rev is often due to lean fuelling so check between the carb & cylinder for leaks.

Bite the bullet and clean out the carb, fuel filter and air filter - Check all hoses for cracking. Get some new (clean) fuel in. Clean up the spark plug. and give it a general once over.

Should be a simple fix but cutting corners won't work.

Oh, and you will more than likely have to reset the idle back to where it was!

8-)
