Well the tourers seem to be ok, so why not Sports..........who knows maybe, just maybe ........

The Japs are starting to loose the Sports bike market....albeit very slowly

There is an article about it in BIKE magazine. Apparently they have to sell it in order to compete in WSB.

Most of the european superbikes a fair bit more expensive than the japanese ones. The BMW HP2 is like 5K more - but this one, which won't have BMW's odd styling or crazy suspension tech will be direct competition in the same price bracket. Coming 2009.

There's one surefire way to tell if it's a beemer. If it only comes with 12" wheels, matt paint and the frame as standard, with everything else on an options list.......

I have to admit I know very little about the racing, but here is the quote from BIKE:

The S1000RR will contend the 2009 World Superbike series in full, run by BMW in conjunction with German race outfit Alpha-Technik. Why WSB and not MotoGP? Von Kuenheim: 'Here, unlike MotoGP, riders are able to watch motocycles in direct competition with competitors. And while racing is never cheap, Superbike is more affordable the MotoGP. You need $40 million for success in MotoGP. In WSB you need a quarter of that budget."

So basically they're a bit tight  And the cynical would say they are only bothering as a promotional tool.
