How Much Power Does the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 SP Make?

The 2021 Yamaha MT-09 SP is the bLU cRU’s up-spec middleweight hyper-naked, utilizing top-shelf Öhlins and KYB suspension components, an added cruise control function, and a premium YZF-R1M-inspired colorway. Trick stuff that adds to its performance and versatility, as noted in our first ride review.

Along with the base-model MT-09 and the Tracer 9 GT sport-tourer, the SP is powered by Yamaha’s all-new liquid-cooled DOHC inline-triple CP3 engine. The big news for the powerplant is a displacement increase from 847cc to 890cc, aiming to meet tightening emissions while maintaining performance. A number of other internal changes were made, as covered in our first ride review of the MT-09.

We placed the MT-09 SP on our in-house Dynojet 250i dynamometer, recording horsepower and torque figures. The SP produced a peak 107.21 hp at 9,930 and 63.32 pound-feet of torque at 7,030 rpm, which is a touch higher than the other CP3-powered models.
