Prilia RS 125 - Not sodding starting :(

Any 2-Stroke guru's out there?

Got an Aprilia RS 125 which has been running but now refuses to start at all :(

Got it out last night to go for a little ride round, tried to start it, starter motor tries but it won't fire up.

Cut a long story short:

- Had the carb off thinking it would be all gunked up - it isn't, looks really clean.

- Changed the fuel filter in the carb - old one was really dirty.

- Put a new spark plug in, correctly gapped.

- Fitted a brand new battery, thinking maybe it wasn't holding enough charge to start the bike under load.

Anyway, despite all that, still won't start.

So, I know the batt and plug are brand new and I know fuel is getting to the carb from the tank. As I said, the starter motor tries, but it just won't catch.

I have took the plug out of the cylinder and held it to the frame, and there is definately a spark there, so now I'm thinking it can't be the HT lead / plug cap :?

On top of that, I think I can smell fuel from the exhaust whilst trying to start it, but seeing as the garage smells like a Glade Plug-In a lá BP Ultimate, I can't be certain. Only thing I am sure of, is that when you place your hand near the exhaust, there is definately pressure blowing out when the starter button is pressed.

One more thing... whilst trying to start it, I flicked the kill switch to the off position to see if maybe the switch was faulty. In the off position, the starter motor still operated when the starter button was pressed Confused

From memory, on every bike I've owned, the kill switch has prevented the engine from even trying to start! Is this just common to Aprilia's or is mine knackered?

Any ideas?

Any ideas at all?

Coz I'm rapidly running out of them, and even armed with a Haynes manual, it's knocking my confidence in trying to learn how to maintain bikes myself instead of paying extortionate dealership charges :(

Cheers all

yep, fuel is new stuff. The bike has been running, but now just seems to not want to play, must be sulkin coz Rossi only managed a 4th at Donny last weekend :?

ummm, timing...? thats starting to sound technical. STU......

Have just been advised on an RS125 forum to check the 'bendix' drive gear behind the starter motor ????????? wtf?, ahh well, looks like it's back to the haynes manual

Edster mate, just over 2 weeks, why? you know summat I don't? ROFL

Well Snoopster, I wondermentised because the thing with Mitos and Prillies is that if you religiously let them warm up before you ride them, and use tip-top top notch oil, they can be very reliable ...

But if some adolecent infested scroat weasel has ragged the arse off a cold engine, they can be a right royal pain in the arse ....

mmm ...

praps thats not what you wanna here ....

mmmmm ... swiflty moving on ....

Umm ... I know  ....

Oooh .. what a loovelly looking bike, damn pretty them Prillies :!:

:D

ok if its getting fuel properly and its defiinitely sparking and it should be a cracking blue spark not some piss ant yellow weak arse thing then ide say the rings are shot mate...it might feel like theres compressoin but there may not be enough to create the pressure to ignite the burn....failing that have ya checked the reeds if one has cracked it will not start bcoz it'll be sucking in way too much air. best thing about smokers is its not a big job to strip n rebuild.... :D

Putting my tuppence in...Ignition coil could be breaking down under load..You may get a nice blue spark at the plug..I believe coils are a weak spot.
