Guest
HiI have an E reg kawasaki GPZ600R bike. It has been standing all winter but started regularly. Back in April when i changed the brake hoses to braided ones. After completion i went to start the bike and it would not start. When inserting the key and turning to ignition point sometimes the lights on the dash are dim, sometimes they are not on at all and sometimes they come on strong. In every case it fails to start. Does not even try to turn over, I just get one click and thats the lot! not even a constant clicking from the starter motor. My first thought was that when i stripped the front fairing maybe i have not reconnected the electrical terminals correctly. I checked and cleaned them and they appear to be ok.I have also checked and cleaned the fuses. I have purchesed a second hand 'unit' in which the fuses sit in under the seat which I have told is working and tested. I have charged the battery and the levels are good. I have a volt meter reading display on the dash and this has a good reading. If anyone has any ideas or things for me to try it will be very much appreciated. If i get this up and running it will hopefully do as either a commuter bike for the winter for myself or a first bike for my girlfriend to ride subject to passing her test. Many thanks for reading this post.Craig This is very similar to the bike in question, only difference is one piece exhaust system. http://www.caringbahmotorcycles.com.au/images/usedbikes/GPZ600_L.jpg
Guest nigelf
make sure you have ALL the connectors on the battery and none have hidden them selves !!! sounds like a missing positive or maybe a poor earth, check the -VE (black) lead off the battery to ground.Nigel

I will have a check of this as soon as i can, maybe the weekend. I will check that the bolts are tight and that there are no missing leads. should the terminals be greased? when you say poor earth what do you mean? how can i improve it? It was a new battery last year so i hope its not that that has gone!Cheers for the swift reply. Craig

Guest
Other option would be just that the battery is boogered ..You need an optimate to store a bike for that length of time ...Just starting it every so often is no good - the starter used juice from the battery .... And if you 're not going for a whizz on it, you won't be charging the battery sufficently ...Get yourself a new battery, AND an Optimate ... j_ase
Try the starter motor mate. Get a ahem hammer or other large and heavy implement and give it a knock then try starting it.I had a problem with my Diversion many years ago and I used to carry a very large suspension spanner with me to give it a whack.Turned out that as the bushes in the starter motor wear down it becomes hard to start. Unless your unit is a sealed unit they are pretty easy to replace.

I will try another battery and take it from there I think. The only problem is i cant use an optimate in the garage because I rent it and there is no electrical supply. What else can I do to maintain the quality of the battery?Cheers for the help.Craig
