Guest
Hi.I'm from Croatia and this is my first post here, maybe someone can help me.I have an Virago 535 and a big problem with electricity. My battery is at 12.5V and when I start the bike it fills it with 13V but as soon as I apply some throttle, charging falls to 12V but it should rise to 14V. That problem causes my battery to drain when I ride my bike.So people tell mi this could be cause of alternator, regulator and battery.First I tested the battery and changed with another and same thing happens, so it isn't a battery. Then I checked the alternator, I disconnected it form the regulator and checked resistance and it's ok, it isn't broken. Than I checked voltage over the 3 alternator wires and they show 18V in idle and about 80V on some moderate throttle. So it isn't an alternator. Then I checked regulator and everything was OK but people told me that you can't check the regulator and I bought a new one (pretty expensive, about 100$), and as it turns out it isn't regulator either. So now I really don't know what is the problem, I'm loosing my mind cause for the last three weeks I don't ride. Please help. rennie
hello and welcome, as gary says put a post in newbies section and say hello.the problem has to be one of the three things you mentioned.80v out of alternator sounds high to me, does it say what it should be in book?my bike charges more at tickover so i wouldn't worry about that.the system will only drain battery if output falls below 12v for a long time, anything above will charge battery. If you're sure the 3 things are right then you must have a big drain somewhere else on bike. good luck!
