Two Questions...

1) This is going to sound really stupid but I cannot for the life of me work out my petrol switch. The bike is a Suzuki GSXR-400. There are three positions, on says ON, another says PRI, and I think the third says RES (althought I really cannot read it propertly, can only make out the E)

Now logically I think I have worked them out, but the PRI confused me. So can people just help me out a bit.

2) When my engine is running I cannot get it into neutral, I can only get it into neutral when the engine is off (either I switch it off or stall it) What needs doing to this? I understand it will be a garage job, but would just like a rough idea.

Cheers people :D

the pri would stand for prime. and as far as the gears go i think it might just be a case of having the lever adjusted slightly or just trying to be more careful. will it change to neutral from second or not?

As andyhipster said, try getting to neutral from second, alternatively select neutral just before you stop

So prime is main then? Or should it be on ON?

I cannot go to neutral from first or second. It will not go to neutral at all.

Cheers for your help so far.

On is where it should be.

Reserve is what is says.

Prime will be to restart after running out / disconnection etc.

Re gear selection, wait until you are stationary before trying to gently engage neutral

Thanks Hoody :)

I have tried the neutral thing, it just wont budge at all, goes straight to second, even with my hand moving it it wont go into neutral :S

Clutch adjustment?

Quite possibly mate, but I havent a clue on these things so I guess itll be a garage job. Thank you for your help :)

And I am so happy I put the restrictor on it, I feel great being 100% legal.

as vicki says try giving it a little rev and change to N

if that doesnt work try changing as your coming to a stop so at about 5mph it should go in

as for the reason it will be either bad adjustment or worn clutch basket

if its adjustment thats easy adjust it at the lever with the turn wheel you should have about 2-5mm of play at the end of the lever

if its the clutch basket you have to pull the clutch apart remove the basket and where the tabs on the cltch touch the basket there will be nothches in there from the clutch pack and they will need filing smooth with a good file 8)

its gonna be your clutch mate. Nip into a bike dealer and theyll do it for you, i would offer and if you want to ride across youre welcome to ;)

the Prime as someone said is for refilling the float bowls when you have had the bike apart.

It doesnt need the vacuum from the engine running unlike On and Res, it just flows...so whatever you do dont leave it in prime. If you do it can overcome your floats and fill your cylinders which isnt good at all.

Thats very very generous!! Surely that would be an inconvenience for you though.

not really mate its a 2 min job, youd be sore though as i live in South Yorkshire. you could do it yourself tbh its pretty easy, the key is not to go mad with it.

basically the most likely cause is that as you pull the clutch lever you arent disengaging the clutch fully so you need to take some slack out of the cable...the key is not to take out too much or your clutch will slip.

so undo the locking part of the cable adjuster and wind it out a quater turn at a time till you can select neutral. You should find it will only take one or 2 quater turns

adjust your clutch then!! a bike should go into Neutral fairly easily, i can get both my bikes into neutral at a standstill with no big clunk, going down the box
