weak spark

hi there. i'm new to this site and wondering if any one can help.

i've got a 1996 cr 250 and it was running fine till a couple of weeks ago. i've put new spark plug in but the spark is very weak i'm no machanic so can any one point me in the right direction. cheers!

welcome and quick question



Had you done anything to the bike prior to the problem beginning ... fitted anything , taken anything off , Pressure washed it ...


things to check Plug Gap, Plug , Plug Lead ( Best time to check for any Plug lead problems is at night in a dark place as if the lead has broken down ( or even the cap) you may sometimes be able to see blue "tracking lines " along the lead .....itg may even be a dodgy kill switch shorting out slightly

Failing that you are entering the realms of ..

Weak Coil , and if fitted CDI unit or pick up coils and as you say if you are not really mechanically mindedto test these are very hard to do and easiest way is if you can narrow it down to a certain thing then try replacing that with a replacement "ebay/breakers /friends" unit


Best thing to do is Buy a Haynes Manual it will help in the long run as you will gain a great insight to what you can actually do and how easy a lot of it is

cheers for your replys. no hadn't added any thing or done anything different before problem one minute was running fine the next it wasn't. i'll have o look at the lead an other stuff tonight after work. an the kill switch cos i,ve had problem with that before. i'll let you know how i get on
