willows gixer problems and update

Well, I had a look at the gixer today after another ride and it going on 2 cylinders again. I get an open circuit between either of the primary coils and earth, so I think that we have a knackered coil (when its running on 2 cylinders you can disconnect the front coil and it makes no difference whatsoever).

So thats a new pair of Dyna 3Ohm coils ordered from ebay and another excuse for me to get in the garage at some point.

Will keep ya all updated when we know more - never know willow might get on a bigger bike one day

Sounds like a right pig, atleast you know what the problem is. good luck.

Nah not really mate, shes a good old girl, just high milage and well ridden so the odd thing is bound to give up on her.

Not that hard a job to change the coils over so will get on it as soon as I can.

ive had issues with dyna coils in the past. Ive gone back to standard and not had an issue since

Cheers Bulli, I went for Dyna's originally cos they were cheaper - suzuki coils £150 each  Dyna ones £100 the pair, the last set of Dyna's were second hand off flea-bay so now gone for a brand spankers pair and see how it goes.

i got a couple of used pairs quite cheap, must admit the dynas throw a mighty spark , I used the 2.2 Ohm ones....as ive got the dyna 2000.

which model gixer is it?

Its a 94 750 WR, the old Dynas have been on for about 10k miles and worked fine, and god knows how long they were fitted to the other guys bike so I cant really complain.

I have got 3 Ohm twin output ones on the way same as the ones fitted just got to fit them (and it would be the front one thats gone - the hardest to get at FFS ).

Still not to bad a job about 2 hours if I remember right.

one is by the headstock covered by the coolant pipes and stuff, the other is at the rear of the engine bay and easy to get to.

Same with mine, tank off, wiggle all the coolant pipes out of the way (might even change the coolant while I am there lol).

  • 2 weeks later...

Right quick update, new coils fitted and its much better.

Willow has now decided that she loves the gixer and will be keeping it, and as it is overfueling and needs a good service its booked in.

Work booked in for:

Carb set up and service on the Dyno (apparently dynojet needles wear out the emulsion tubes so they will probably need replacing) including balance.

New Cam Chain tensioner.

Valve clearences and safety service.

Hole in exhaust welded up.

I think I might want the gixer back after this cos is should go like stink

Will update again once its back on the road, and hopefully with before and after dyno charts!!!

all sounds good :D

but do you think willow will be happy with no more flames ?

can the air box be opened up on the gsxr mark ? just thinking it might be worth doing it before the dyno set up :)

OK well the gixer is now well and truly sorted !!!!

They balanced everything, reset the carbs, serviced it and put it on the dyno to find that if set up on tick over it runs lean at the top end suggesting an air leak.

So one new set of carb rubbers and she is now running sweeeeeet as, the guys have done a real good job and she is now putting out a genuine 97 Bhp at the rear wheel, which is not bad considering the Suzuki figure at launch was 105 or 110 Bhp. The fuel air mixture is pretty good now and it all feels as it should.

We now have a happy willow !!
