Good gear won't ever let you down.

Everything will depends on the use you will be making.

If you're a fair weather or all year rider.

What you're planning for the next 5 to 7 yrs. Stay at CBT level or go full license.

I'm biased on bikes. For me honda all the way Most here will, rightly so, tell you to stay away from Chinese bikes. They are cheap but you will spend loads of time fixing it.

I would say for you to guest start looking into insurance as it will be the most expensive item for a rookie.

Then after you know the correct funds you're left  left with. You can start looking for a decent second hand bike.

Keep in mind that you will drop it and fall over a few times. It's part of the learning process, so don't buy anything you will spend too much repairing and that when you decide to upgrade for something better will leave you with little exchange value.

It would help us if you could you let us know what you're planning to use your bike for: Commuting (and if so how far is it, what are the speed limits you're going to ride)? Days out? Rides with mates? Longer trips?

As for bike, get a 2nd hand Japanese 125, doesn't matter too much about age or mileage, as long as it has been looked after. It will be reliable, and won't lose you any money when you come to sell it on. Any that matches this description will do you fine, unless you're particularly short or tall, in which case you might have to look around to find one that fits your size.

Helmet: buy new. Go to a real shop where they sell one and ask for help getting the right fit. Without help, people tend to choose one that's too loose.

Other kit: buy secondhand from ebay. But what you get depends on what kind of riding you're going to do.

Hi

advice given by husoi and bonio is sound, though out of the japs im less keen on Hondas as my first pick but that’s just me personally.
yes keep away from the Chinese or Italian branded Chinese owned and manufacturer like benelli- unless you have the time, money, resources and skill to fix them a lot.

also avoid mutt and weird brands that claim to be British or Spanish etc some dealers will show you, their nasty cheap Chinese stuff…

helmets interior give over time so if its tight/very snug when new without any pressure points or pinching after wearing it for about 10-15 min while in the shop while your hot it wont to too tight in summer.

ull work out if your and round (shoei), square (hjc) or triangle (agv), or inbetween shape head depending on which manufacturer you go with. Pinlock visor inserts (require visor with pins) are great for cold and wet use.

dont get too drawn into decals, it’s the details in the helmet that are more important.
