Just a quick one :)

Bike one day wouldn't start via the push switch (only method). Now.. There is one way It will work... If you give the starter motor a little kick while pressing the starter button (lol...) and now, it either does or doesn't work after a ride (however, the give the stater motor a slight kick works) Not very 'practical'.

Now.. What would be wrong with the starter motor for it to be like this? (Is it even the starter motor?)

Should I replace the starter motor, or simply take it off and fix what could be wrong (dont know...)

Cheers.

sounds like the starter is sticking

carry a hammer to save your feet

take it off see if you can strip it clean it up and a bit of grease otherwise its a new starter :)

it's probably the solenoid sticking, use electrolube or something similar

I'm assuming I have to take the starter off to get to the solenoid?

Rennie says it should be fastened on the outside, where the wires go in

Wires? :D

This is what mine kinda looks like:

main wire goes where that bolt is

hmmm brake cleaner :? "might" be ok for cleaning it out personally i wouldnt as its a very strong solvent

WD40 would be fine

my starter on my 4X4 makes some strange sounds and sticks after a good offroading session a good jetwash and WD40 sorts that out :)

the starter motor uses a lot of current, the solenoid is a coil which pulls the main contacts in to engage the actual motor. they stick all the time!.

they have moving mechanical parts! don't use brake cleaner!

 have you got a multimeter?, any idea about electrics?

you need to check the coil itself for continuity. it's probably just mechanically sticking. have you got an auto electrical place near you? they'll be able to check it out in about 2 minutes!

very unusual to find a starter solenoid mounted on the starter on a bike. They usually use a remote solenoid under the seat next to the battery and a one way clutch on the starter gear.

Just took it off and gave it all a clean etc.. put it back together and put it on the bike and well.. It doesn't work at all now, not even when I do the usual 'kick method'. However.. On inspection I could see that the 'cog' was turning.. but didnt seem very powerful..? also, I could hear the cog turning, which I couldn't before..

I'm guessing this means a new starter then?

Had another look at it today. I took out the 'thread' and gave it all a good clean etc. I then cleaned the magnetic coils.. and afew other stuff.. and put it back together.. and woohoo it works now :D

Cheers for all the replies.
