Foz Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 ran out of fuel yesterday on my honda VT600, wasnt far from home (infact i finally conked out about 100M away) so pushed her home into the garagegot some fuel today and filled her up, havent tried starting her again yet, however i noticed the tank itself, is loose! it can be lifted up on one side!! what the hell do i do now? any hlep will be much appreciated Foz Quote
Korben Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Don't know a fix mate, but you might want to check that you didn't run out of fuel because it leaked out with it being lose. Quote
Foz Posted December 18, 2008 Author Posted December 18, 2008 as far as i could tell no it didnt but it did run out of fuel pretty quickly!! 2.9 gallon tank and konked out on 104miles dunno i'll have to see tomorrow!! Quote
Bill_on_a_bike Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 I'd imagine the tank is held on with a bolt or 2, to get to them you'll probably have to get the seat off. Might be worth checking they're tight. If they are tight, i'd suggest getting the tank right off, see if it's got a dent or something stopping it sitting properly.Short of that, sit on the floor and cry Quote
Foz Posted December 18, 2008 Author Posted December 18, 2008 thanks bill! cant find a single bolt but its nicely held on one side, just not the other!! seat and all body panels are off for a bit of a cleancant see nuffink!! im gonna go find a piece of floor to cry on, thanks for the advice Foz Quote
Guest Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 some tanks slide on forward onto two rubber mounts/bushes that are pushed onto lugs on the frame one of these rubbers may be missing ... what bike is it again .... Quote
Guest Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 2.9gallon tank = 13.05 ltrs roughly mine is about a 15ltr tank and going for it it will last approx 110 milesso depending on the speed and how much you were going for it that may be the case Quote
Guest Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 vt500 tank mounts may be similar to the vt600 sorry i just realsied what bike you had these sort of thingsfor illustration Quote
Foz Posted December 18, 2008 Author Posted December 18, 2008 thanks Tim, i'll have a look in the daylight on sunday after workthe 500's, apart from being all imports, are an older design but it may be the case! either way david silver does spares for the 600 shadows and if its missing a few bits ill get them orderdthe tank is fixed down on one side (the right if you sit on the bike) but and be lifted on the left hand side, i'll also check for leaking on sunday Quote
Guest Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 If it lifts from the front then it has come off or is missing one of the Rubbers (No19 in Picture), as it is only held on by one bolt at the back, if it lifts there the bolt is either lose or missing and the tank is being supported by the seat..http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-vt600c-shado ... F++13.htmlLuckily the Cushions are 5 Euro so less than a tenner inc postage. Quote
Foz Posted December 19, 2008 Author Posted December 19, 2008 thanks frank however it oest lift from the front or back atall!! its the side Quote
Guest Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 If you take hold of the tank and can roll it along the centre one way, the i would suggest that both your bolt and a bush are missing.. (begs the question, what else is...)as it is held by 3 points then it has to be more front right or front left, i would suggest that you remove the seat, check that the bolt is secure a this will aid lift then remove bolt and pull tank backwards, this will give you access to see if one of the bushes is missing, as in the diagram sent previously.I have taken several bikes apart and if the tank is not seated on the bushes or they are omitted, this gives you your opening question. Foz Posted December 21, 2008 Author Posted December 21, 2008 well today was the day! had a good ol' tinker and a quick clean!! it is definatley the rubber bung on the mounting lug as mentioned above (thanks you ) and i think the lack of mileage to tank is down to being due a good servicealso noticed the coolant is very very low! so am i right in thinking aany coolant will do? or is it specific?anyway i now think the carb is crudded up!! bike wont start! probably due to having muck in the bottom of the tank then running it dry...i thinkso ill see if i can get someone to clean that for me, get the rubber bung, put some coolant in, get it serviced and everything is done then i can start spending money on pretty things thanks for your help Quote
Guest Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Any coolant will do, but get the mix right, especially now with the cold weather,. Quote

Guest Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 mix? what do you mix it with? :Soh well im getting it service next week along with carbretter cleaned out etc etc so will ask for it to be done then coolant = antifreeze and water mix read the instructions of the antifreeze you get..... Quote
