riding the other day and i heard a very loud scratching sound. the only way i can describe it is as if someone was scratching a sharp point down the plastic, sounded like it was coming from the front hugger but i cant find any obstruction. i also had little vibration thru the bars when the noise was there andit seemed worse when leant over.

it is intermitent and sometimes louder than others.

any idea's?

lean left or right ? if to left may be the side stand spring weak /pivot needs lube and its dragging low ( or if fitted centre stand may be hanging low...

not got a center stand but i will have a look at the side stand, it is pretty stiff to move it though, but yeh i will have a look see

right went to the bike shop today to pick their brains. and £40 later i was on my way home :(

the front bearings had collapsed and they said that was prolly the problem, so i amriding with new bearings and will see, although now i have a new noise pmsl, but i think that is the shit chain i have on

A "HUGGER" is an aftermarket trim that sits under the seat fairing and made of plastic, a Mudguard is that fitted to the front over the wheel, and a Belly pan is the Plastic that sits under the engine, this would make your problem that with the Front Mudguard and therefore Front Wheel, not the Rear as i thought when reading your question..

oh and Walney there is such a thing as a hugger mudguard ;) but these are normally on the rear. The bit under the seat is an undertray ....oh and they are stock on many bikes now.....

lol sorry i couldnt help myself....its not like its hard to find a list of parts in the days of google is it ...

the worrying thing for me on most forums- this is not a pop at anyone on here- is that people offer advice who know less than nothing...and worse sometimes give the wrong advice. opinions are ok for colour choices but not when its a potential matter of life or death!!

have a look at this thread for a classic example....i still think its a troll but who knows ;)

right, done a few miles this weekend, 230+ and things seem to be ok, but i do still have a rattle which i am not convinced is the chain, its like she is struggling when bout 3/4k revs. no it might just be my paranoia now but i want to know, do i have carb warmers on or is it them freezing up do you think?

can you see an electrical wire under the carbs? this is the wire for the Carb Warmers.

doesn't sound like carb icing to me, have you changed the plugs recently? otherwise may be worth it, to get a better spark..

Also, put your bike on the Centre stand and turn the rear wheel by hand slowly, if you find a tight spot, you may have a stuck/Rusted link, which has difficulty over the smaller front sprocket, this would cause a problem at low revs, like when riding through town, and may cause the rest of the chain to rattle.. it also feels like the engines having a problem.. (I've had this on my Bandit, and was thinking £££££'s, but was just the chain..)

if the wheel moves freely through a full rotation of the chain, and your chain is correctly adjusted, (about 1" of slack/free play) then your chain is okay, but you may as well lube it anyway...

part from not having a center stand i already know i need a new chain, got one on order and just waiting for it to arive. it sounds like you just hit the nail on the head.

right.....are you ready.......chain and sprockets are new. (me and make spend sunday changing them) that big rattle is gone and the bike is moving smoothly now so i know that was one of the main problems. but now.............

i still have a rattle which is bugging me, it also seems to be loosing a cylinder when ia m at around 3k revs and when i am cruising at around 80 it seems to cough and splutter every now and again. now i have not changed my plugs but i am thinking there is a possible blockage in the tank or pipes so am going to try a line cleaner over the next few weeks to see if it smooths it out. what you thing guys n gals???

is the rattle engine or could it be panel related, go round and check all the panels are nice and tight..

what bike are you on..? if its a twin, does it only effect one cyclinder?

if its a four does it effect one or two..? a dirty plug or a faulty coil could cause the misfire/coughing, on a four it would affect two cylinders normally 1 and 3 or 2 and 4, as they are on the same coil pack. and i think Vtwins have a coil each too..
