Guest philgale Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 ok, my bandit has not been starting very well, takes a couple of goes to fire it up...the igniction thingy is working ok as it ticks the engine over ok,i can smell fuel so its pumping that through, but still doesnt start first time, last night it took about 10 mins to starttoday i changed the spark plugs, but no luck still takes its time starting...any ideas on what could be causing this problem, my usual machanic (my brother) is away on holiday this wek so i cant even ring him...any help will be appriciated...i might even stick it on ebay and get a sports bike Quote
Guest Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 If you can smell fuel i suspect the engines flooding, try starting without the choke this weather it shouldnt really need much choke to start Quote

Guest Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 is it turning over fast enough, can you check the battery output with a volt meter also try removing and cleaning the plugs Quote
Guest philgale Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 its turning over fine, so battery isnt flat its still the same as when i got it...i have brand new plugs in already but have no idea whats causing it not to start every time Quote
Guest Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 Try turning the throttle before you start it and then start. (so there's fuel in the system). That's what they've told me to do when i got my harley. Quote

Stu Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 what mileage ?is it due a valve check/adjust carbs/throttle bodie balance ?is it injection ? or carbed ? Quote
Guest Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 if ya can smell fuel..... turn the tap to the off......then turn over sounds like ya flooding it mate Quote
Guest philgale Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 the longest the bike has stood not riden is 2 days, and how do you turn the fuel off...i know there is a tap that switches it to prime and reserve but didnt know you can turn it off... Quote
Guest philgale Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 oh yeah its a 2001 with 12,500 on the clock...so not much reallyand its injection... Quote
Guest Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 next time it wont start, after a min or so of trying take a plug out & check it. if the plug is wet then your problem is a lack of spark, if its dry its a lack of fuel.also why the plug is out, plug into the lead & lay it on the top of the engine touching bear metal & spin the engine over. you should see a nice white spark on the plug - you may need to hold the plug against the bike, some people use their hand but i dont trust the insulation so use insulated pilers.my rf sluks if leave it for a few weeks - barely starts & when it does i have to let it run for about 10-15mins before it will rev without stalling. im told the earlier water cooled engines tend to let the cylinders get moist which damps down the cylinder so it cant burn. wouldnt have thought 2 days was long enough for that though. Guest philgale Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 just noticed today the oil was on the low side, wonder if this coul dhave contributed to the lack of starting and what sort of damage can it cause running on bare minumun...it is now topped up and seems to run a lot better but not starting to great Quote
Guest nigelf Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 When was the last time it had its air filter changed? if the oil was low it could have got into the air system and slowly soaked the filter element causing it to be very rich on starting hence the flooding. Take the element out and examine it to see if it looks "wet" bandits also have carb de-ice elements in the intake manifold although there is no freezing tempretures they may help with starting or not if they are blown or dissconnected.just a couple of ideas...
