Guest
Hey guys 'n galsWent for a mammoth 280 mile run yesterday and had a great day... but a small niggle has got more noticable and it concerns the front wheel bearings. For maybe 1000 miles or so I've been experiencing a slight vibration from the front when braking hard... and sometimes a little vagueness and wobble. Also had a few moments yesterday on the A44 near Leominster where it almost felt like I had a flat Suspecting the wheel bearings I washed the bike and checked the front and rears. The rears were fine, no movement laterally when grabbing the wheel anywhere during its rotation. The front isn't as easy to check periodically owing to it always resting on the ground, but I jacked the bike up by its downpipes and gave it a good looking over... and sure enough there is play there, opening up a 0.5 - 1.0mm gap between the inner edge of the bearing and the spacer on the offside of the front wheel. I was happy I identified the problem, but it means I'm gonna have to order a new pair of bearing... should I get a new pair of dust seals whilst I'm at it?Changing the bearings seems pretty straightforward, at least looking at the Haynes manual. Does anyone have any advice regarding removal, cleaning and refitting?Cheers guys,Rick.
iain
hi rick, you would be better off with new dust seals too mate.most of the new bearings come sealed anyway but if you do get new seals then you know its all done properly and you wont have to do them at a later date also when fitting your new bearings, if you dont have a press you can use a large socket with the same diameter as the bearings outer ring. you dont want to hit the inner ring when putting the new ones in mate as it might damage them.when tapping the new bearings in i found that working ( tapping ) at 12,6, 3,9 like a clock face works best.hope this helps mate
