In 2006 richie took to racing on the Irish roads for the first time and competed in the prestigious North West 200 , narrowly missing the podium but still winning the best overall newcomer for an event which saw more than 350 riders from over 20 countries take part . In 2007 Richie moved up motorcycle size and took part in Triumph Triple Challenge , after scoring several podiums on his Triumph 675 he suffered a near career ending injury which resulted in three operations to save his left leg . Back on a bike in August 2008 , 11 months after his accident , Richie contested the last 4 rounds of the Derby Phoenix 11 round national Formula 400 Championship back on his trusted Yamaha fzr 400 rrsp taking sevaral hard fought podiums and a double win at his favourite track Oulton Park in Chesire , finishing 7th in the overall standings .
