Hiya,

Still on my search for cheap but cheerful textile clothing. Is Richa any good?

Perhaps if someone had the time and knowledge, a run-down of cheap but recommended gear and brand info would be great for newbies on the forum. But hey, if it happened, it would be past my time of need. Anyway, I was looking for an Akito python jacket but it had sold out, then I saw this Richa Asura Textile Waterproof Motorcycle Jacket. I know it's cheap, and how much is my life worth, but is it any good for the budget?

Wanna, I have Richa gear and I`m very happy with it both for cost, protection (padding and armour in right places) and comfort. What waist are you, I`m selling some Rich, Highway Slider leather trousers for £60. They will zip to any Richa jacket you may buy.

I'm a blurry 32-34 (depending on where I buy or style of trousers).

Good to know you like your gear, recommendation is one of the things I trust most. Leather trousers....I want to go for textiles really, or are they a mix? I'll google them and take a look. Leather doesn't have the waterproofing, but is better in a crash....right?

Come summer mate you`ll want leather. Some of the panels are flexible material so they vent well. Textiles could get hot in summer, (I think) Leather is better for protection against abraision. Go into the "for sale" section, you`ll see a picture of them there.

My boyfriend has a textile Richa jacket, he had an off on Monday (he wasn't going THAT fast though) but there's not a mark on it, at all!!

Anyway... I know you said you're on a budget but I noticed the one you linked to is sold out now, so what about this? I know its like £45 more but its leather  which means it'll be better for protection, plus it has 5 piece CE armour and comes in 4 different colours...

Got to say, that one is not my sort of thing, but I found myself looking at it and going 'cooool!' It does look nice. Think I'm going to have to go second hand, for better quality kit at bargain price. On with the search!!!! Richa is sounding good on the forum though!

there will be a load on ebay, try find some local so you can go try on, as nothing worse then getting some gear and it not fitting when it arrives!

as for Alpinestars and other big brands, yep you pay for the name more then the quality. But if ya a brand whore like Korben  that wont matter!

most have CE approved Armor but to get CE approved leather will cost you £600+

Also the Superbike pros leathers are different to the ones that can be bought from the shops ;)

Hey Bigup, cheers.

It's a good point about trying stuff on. I measured myself up and found that I sized up as a medium jacket, but when I tried some on today (at the dealers) I was quite obviously a small. It was crazy. I measured as a L in trousers (as a 34inch waist) but the trousers that fit me were XXL!!! WTF? So, good job I tried stuff on.

I got a fine enough deal at the dealers, so I'll get that stuff for now. Next time I buy, I'll have more experience of what I like and want.

CAN'T WAIT 'TIL TUESDAY!!!!!!! Picking the gear and my bike up.

Wanna, I would tend not to worry about buying 'cheaper' branded motorcycle clothing. Nearly all of the major brands, be it textiles or leathers, are made in the same factories under license (usually Pakistan and Turkey) and then branded prior to export and merchandising. So paying extra for a brand like Alpinestars or Dainese is not a guarantee of quality, you're just paying more for the brand name, but essentially getting the same thing. Therefore brands like Akito, Richa, RST, HG represent better value for money.

There are a few exceptions to this. AFAIK Wolf is still British made, Furygan is French made and anything you buy made to measure (BST, Crowtree for example) will be just that.

Happy shopping...

That's terrible! That's the kind of background info a newbie needs to acquire, there's so much sales talk, it's hard to know who to believe -- with the exception of fellow riders with experience.

It's pretty much standard across all clothing industries. Whilst in Sri Lanka in 2004 I visited the Next factory where a friend worked, which was a nice air-conditioned clean factory, although they did work very long hours. However down the street was another factory, filthy, sweltering hot and infested with insects. I was shocked to see the clothing being packaged up to leave that factory; Bench, Diesel, Karen Millen, Ted Baker. Don't believe the label. It's a mugs game...

Just as well that I'm not well off enough to buy those labels (except Bench), otherwise I'd have to start shopping responsibly. Does make one consider their own contribution to the exploitation.
