issues starting when hot

Hello.

I have a honda cbr600f(x). recently the bike doen't want to restart if i have just been on a long ride and have just switched the engine off. It is as if the battery if flat as the tacho flashes and the starter motor barely does a thing. I can bump start it to get round it, but it won't start properely till the following morning. As it fixes it after a day of rest, i think the battery is ok. does anyone know of an issue like this happening to them? Is it because the engine has got too hot?

Is it intermittent or does it happen after every single time you've been for a ride? If so how long a ride, or will it happen after running the bike for 10 seconds?

Are there any noises when you try and turn it over? I.e. a drilling/fast clicking noise coming from inside the fairing somewhere. If so then it could be that the terminals on the starter relay need a good scrub up. Also check all the connections in the ignition loop, that being both battery terminals (positive is for ignition loop but might as well do both), connections on starter relay and final connection to the starter motor itself.

If there are no noises and it just will not start full stop still check all the terminals mentioned above and report back!

My old CBR600 used to do that, you couldn't restart it for about 5 minutes if it was hot. I never did find out what caused it though. :?

seems odd but batteries do have different capacities at different temperatures. when cool, you'll get a good kick out a battery. when hot, a little less. it's possibly a faulty battery. go for a run then have a feel of the battery to see if it's getting hot. it should be warm (~30degc) as it will of been charging but much more than that and you should get it tested.

not sure if all bike garages do it but kwick-fit do a battery test with a special meter.

best test to do is with a volt meter...

ignition off - battery voltage 12.5 - 12.7v

ignition on engine off - battery volts may drop ~0.2v

ingition on engine on (just started with choke on - high idle speed) - battery volts ~13.2v

if you rev the engine, the volts should never exceed 13.5v. if it does your regulator is knackered and will cause battery overheat due to excessive charging.
