Guest Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 I know it is a very vague question and the actual answer depends on the usage pattern and the type of bike whether a sports, cruiser, touring or trial, but in general usage what would be the broad average life of a drive chain on a bike, lets say for a sports tourer doing about 6-8K miles annually? Blackadder Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 If properly checked, adjusted & lubed, I'd say you should get at least 3 years out of it. Quote
Guest Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 Agreed with Blackadder. Do need to look after it... Quote
zzr lon Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 a quality c&s should see 20k easily if maintained propperly on a st bike.but 10-15k on a sports bike is about it.c&s kits these days are far better than they used to be Quote
hYpYz Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 i have yamaha ybr 125 and i commute to work every day and on weekends im going out for a ride(im going soonxD ) how often should i lube my chain and what else should i do? Quote
Guest Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 The reason I ask is that the chain on my Sprint St had become quite lose. I tightened it and went for my trip. In London I noticed it had become lose again, so I tried tightening it but it went lose very quickly after that. When I got back i tried tightening it but it would not tighten any more. The bike has done 23k in about 8 years but i have no idea when the chain was changed. I will be replacing the chain this weekend but also need to know the frequency of replacement. I do keep the chain clean and greased regularly so hopefully it will last me a fair few years. Quote

Hey hYpYz,As subject open to much debate..... The manual (for my honda) states every 600 miles. Other members clean and lube more often, some less often. It is important to clean the chain because the dirt it picks up can turn into a paste and act as an abrasive, shortening the life of the chain that much quicker. Personally I do mine as per book, but if it looks like it needs it, I do it earlier. The reason I ask is that the chain on my Sprint St had become quite lose. I tightened it and went for my trip. In my experience Prof, once the chain goes like that (assuming it has been neglected) it doesn't last much longer. But if you stay on top of it, it can last a good few years as has been suggested. don't forget to look in to some of the gadgets available, ie Scotoiler and lubeman. Personally I prefer to do it manually, because that way, you don't rely on the reliability of said gadget. If it stops working... you can kill your chain.Hope this helps.Oh, and I moved this into pitstop.... Quote
