I never really got the hang of learning stopping distances, ( for my car test I had them written on my hand ) :twisted:

I saw in the test centres now they have cameras in every booth so thats not really an option now.

All you gotta remember though is 2/2.5/3/3.5/4/.4.5

Use it like this ( For overall stopping distances in feet )

20x2 = 40

30x2.5 = 75

40x3 = 120

50x3.5 = 175

60x4 = 240

70x4.5 = 315

The thinking time in feet is always the same as the speed in MPH, so you can easily work out the breaking distance by subtracting the speed from the overall stopping distance.

when i had to learn stopping distances i got told to multiply it by first number then half it and add speed on to get total distance.

ie 30 x3 = 90 half of 90 is 45 plus 30 so 75 is answer

40x4 = 160 halfis 80 plus 40 so 120 feet is answer

50x5 =250 half is 125 plus 50 so 175 and so on

i find it easy to remember so might come in handy for others.
