Today I finally went and bought a back protector - I've had a nagging thought for a while that I don't really want to end up as a cabbage if I have a crash!

I got the Knox Contour from Hein Gericke ... £99.99 very well spent, and the thing is incredibly comfortable! Of all the ones I tried on, it felt the most substantial and it covered the greatest area of my back, including the shoulder blades and the whole of the spine.

I would highly recommend it to anyone thinking of getting one.

I decided that I should buy it there and then when I asked myself the question, "Is your spine worth more than £99.99?".

Snap! I have that one as well. The thing that got me convinced to buy one was that I was in a bike shop one day just reading the labels on the back protectors. I hadn't really thought much past the 'getting paralyzed' part but then read that doing damage to my spine could result in loss of all sexual functions! So I thought "F*ck THAT!" and got one, pronto!

me too, i reckon it saved me from more serious injury... will be sorting out a replacement today

Actually, it was reading your thread about your crash that put the final nagging worry into my head and made me go and buy one!

I know it is purely psychological, but I immediately started riding much better, smoother and more confidently the moment I went out with it on.

You might be right mate... It does hold your spine in a good position, so you might actually have a better seating position on the bike.

Really chuffed that by posting details of the accident has meant that at least one person has improved their personal safety :D

Also my mate, Carlos Von Brum on here, has also thought about this safety and is actually coming to HG with me later to upgrade his kit.

Can you slip it in to a jacket? or can you only have it on a star system thing?

Really should get something more substantial than the foam one in my jacket but its really not going to practical if its another piece of kit i have to take on and off and store when going to work.

The Knox Contour won't fit inside your jacket, no. However, before I bought mine I thought the same as you about it being just an extra piece of kit. I'm glad I got it, and it's not that big either. It's pretty thin and stores easily. It's not until you get a 'proper' back protector that you realise how rubbish the foam inserts really are. I say back protector because the Contour protects most of the back, not just the spine.

wear it under ur jacket, not in it... and yeah, its a decent one ;) worth the effort when getting kitted up... all of 10s

I have a level 2 forcefield one for long rides (straps on back, full length), and a knox one in my jacket.

Feels nice having it on, very secure, especially when I ride with both
