problem with nut on crank shaft to access my magneto

Recommended Posts

Hey guys so i have a 1983 yamaha IT 250 (2 stroke) and ive never had any sort of ignition problem untill a couple weeks ago, i was riding and it just flat out died. the lead is fine, plug is brand new. so my question is what should i check now? and if the next thing i should check is the magneto how do i get the pesky nut off of the crank shaft to remove that metal cylandrical cover off? is there some special tool?

p.s if you want a picture i could get one if it helps.

thanks, Riley.a

do you get a spark when turning it over?

do you have fuel in the tank?

Yes to fuel, No to Spark..

continuing...

have you a picture or a Haynes Manual..?

I Havent worked on 2 strokes in quite some time.. and would hate to make things more complicated than necessary...

is it electric or kick start?

does it have a kill (big Red) Switch..?

when was the last time it ran..?

have you check the CDI box?

Have you checked the connections to the coil?

if you google IT250 Spark, the Kill Switch comes up.. so i don't know if its a common fault?

also check the connections to the coils and CDI, undo them then push them back in, this cleans the contacts slightly... also if they look green and furry then give them a clean.. with a brass brush and some wd40..

no i believe the kill switch is the only way to turn on or off... apart from stalling or running out of fuel..
