wannaride Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Hey everyone,My mum (bless er!) has insisted on buying me a back protector, with a budget of £50.There's a knox one that will fit into my jacket -for £16. It's just a plank I guess. Or there is the sort to go under my jacket, with neck and kidney protection also. I lean in favour of this and being as protected as possible, but the cheapest in my local shops is an oxford one for £69.99.Are there any that people can recommend with that sort of function, but a £50 sorta budget? Online is fine -just need to know what's good to buy for the budget. Thanks a lot! Quote

Pete Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Not sure what the relevance of promoting the site is to back protectors Dan...maybe you know something I don't Your mum sounds like a very sensible lady! I can highly recommend the Knox Contour, but it's more than £50. I haven't tried any other ones out, but I did get mine on a very good deal on ebay. It's extremely comfy, is wider at the top so protects your back not just your spine and you can add kidney and chest protection to it.Why not get on ebay and see if there are any bargains? If there's none in your price range either contact the seller to ask for a cheeky deal or...don't be such a tight git and pay for some yourself! In my opinion a back protector is as sensible as a helmet. I don't much rate the jacket insert ones as much as the dedicated ones that strap onto your body, but anything's better than nothing. Before I bought mine I even used to carry a rucksack with a Haynes manual inside! Quote

wannaride Posted June 3, 2009 Author Posted June 3, 2009 well yeah, i'll top up if i can, but times aren't too friendly - just added another piglet to the household yesterday, so we are watching the pennies -but the real point is that safety is a big concern with a young family. Was going to get spine protector in august (for birthday) but my scared li'l momma has offered 50 bucks now. Think i can sqeeze about £20 out of somewhere (now that's a magic trick!), so yeah, might be able to afford a bit more!I have some good recommendations now, so I'll try to afford them (would rather spend money on a recommendation than a sales pitch!!Cheers everyone. wannaride Posted June 4, 2009 Author Posted June 4, 2009 Cool, I'll keep all that in mind. Have looked at eBay and seen some back protectors, but none of them seem to go high up to the nect, so how would they protect that part?Anyway, I'll keep googling!!!I love it really! Quote

Quentin Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 I recently bought a back protector for £50 including delivery http://www.getgeared.co.uk/SUPER_SHIELD_Back_Protector_Belt?sc=20&category=-120Its CE approved level 2 and is pretty comfy when riding. Quote
DutchMick Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Its something you should have but never ever want to find out if it works or not Are they not like helmets, can they sell something for your safety without following certain production standards? What I mean is, a protector for 30 quid should protect you to a certain standard. At least thats what I think, but there again I'm an idiot Quote

To add to what Frankie has said - there are two CE levels. Level 1 is the lowest and Level 2 offers the best protection. Also to what Frankie said earlier about them going up the neck and not being able to move your head - if they did go up to the neck you'd get it rubbing and making your neck sore. Quote
