JoshTimmins Posted June 3, 2009 Author Posted June 3, 2009 was a brand new battery fully charged, left onthe bike, next day it was dead :/ is there anything on the bike that will be able to drain the battery even if the bike isnt switched on? if you know what i meanJoshxwill need to get a new battery now anyway! rennie Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 yes there is plenty of stuff that will drain the battery!Has it got alarm? immobiliser?you need to find the fault brfore using new battery or you'll fry that as well! Quote

Joshx Quote
rennie Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 have you got a multi meter?see if there's a short to earth, 1 of the battery leads should be connected to earth the other shouldn't.if there's no alarm etc fitted then something else is draining the battery.probably something shorted to earth that shouldn't be!if you leave the new, fully charged battery connected for long it will drain that too Quote
JoshTimmins Posted June 3, 2009 Author Posted June 3, 2009 dad might have.. will ask him.anyone know what the main things to check first could be?Thanks and sorry im not a electrical man Joshx Quote
rennie Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 presuming you have a meter:first check that the earth lead is actually connected to earth, should be very low resistance.then check the other lead to earth, should be very high resistance.I would then go round all visible wiring/connections/lamps etc and look for obvious problems, corrosion etc.if you have a fault showing on the meter then when you disturb the problem the fault will go away!it's very difficult to tell someone how to do it good luck! JoshTimmins Posted June 3, 2009 Author Posted June 3, 2009 so come do it for me? lol will ave alook friday thanks guysJoshx Quote

JoshTimmins Posted June 4, 2009 Author Posted June 4, 2009 sorry me again, need to check something!I surely need the battery connected to test with the meter? (dad does have one)i havnt got a workin battry for the bike cos old one is dead as a dodo lol.so i cannot do it? thinkin i may jst not bother lolJoshx Quote
rennie Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 you can do some tests without the battery!put the meter on the resistance setting, (ohms), touch the leads together it should read zero and or buzz.put 1 lead on a good earth on the bike frame, put other meter lead on 1 of the battery leads, earth lead should be very low resistance or buzz again.other lead should be very high resistance.if it isn't you've got a short.waggle lamps cables etc till short goes away, sorted! I will check this thread on sat from sue's and come and have a look if you're still struggling Quote

JoshTimmins Posted June 13, 2009 Author Posted June 13, 2009 bit of a bump, but due to money problems i dont wanna buy a new battery just yet and want to give this resistance checkin thing one more time..we have a digital multi meter.is someone able to find me or draw up some kind of connection diagram of what to do and what reading im looking for?Sorry and thanks Joshx Quote
rennie Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 josh i'm a bit busy at work tonight so haven't got a lot of time.I have already tried to explain what to do,just go through it methodically, you'll be ok. Quote
JoshTimmins Posted June 16, 2009 Author Posted June 16, 2009 understandable right ive tried and this is what i got:one lead on battery, one on the bike, earthed.set the multimeter up..was getting 0.00 at this point... wiggled(funny word haha) all the wires around, everything around the clocks, inside the headlamp, indicators, tail light, lifted the seat and every wire under there and yet no change at all.then thought i set it up wrong so turned it down a setting and i was gettin 1.4/5 did same ting, wiggled all the wires and still no change. i am obv doin it wrong or there is no problem lmao!Tryin to see if i can find someone with a spare battery to borrow.thanks for your help rennie!Joshx Quote
rennie Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 make sure meter is on ohms, leads apart-high readingtouch leads together-zero.get that right first!disconnect battery!test on ends of loose leads to earth, ( this means put 1 meter lead on a known good earth and then use other meter lead to test) 1 should be very low (connected to earth) confirm this!the other should be high reading(not connected to earth) confirm this!do above and come back to me, we'll get there in the end Quote
JoshTimmins Posted June 16, 2009 Author Posted June 16, 2009 right set up... apart shows 1 leads together 0.00setup done!one lead on earth.. other lead on one of the leads that connect to the battery and got 0.00same lead on earth.. other lead on the other lead that connects to the battetry and got 1.
